Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Which of the four models you have, and whether the fault is on the Fold's cover or inner display
  • The result of Settings, Display and touch, Touch diagnostics
  • Whether the fault appears only in one app, with a case on, or while charging
  • The Android build and whether Adaptive touch is on

0 of 7 completed
  1. Check the screen

    Reversible

Remove the case or screen protector, take off gloves, peel any stickers over the screen or sensors and clean the screen, as Google lists.

  2. Run Touch diagnostics

    Reversible

Open Settings, Display and touch, Touch diagnostics and follow the test. Google says this is the first step for the Pixel 9 family and later.

  3. Check for a system update

    Reversible

Check for a system update, by opening Settings, System, Software updates and installing any update.

  4. Adjust gesture navigation

    Reversible

If the fault is with swipes, open Settings, System, Navigation mode, Gesture navigation, and adjust the sensitivity.

  5. Try Adaptive touch

    Reversible

Open Settings, Display and touch, Touch sensitivity and turn Adaptive touch on or off, as Google suggests. Screen protector mode is for the Pixel 8a and earlier.

  6. Test in Safe mode

    Reversible

Restart in Safe mode; if touch works there, a downloaded app is the likely cause, and you can uninstall recent apps one by one.

  7. Start a repair request

    Reversible

If touch still fails, start a Google Store repair request. Google says the diagnostic shares the model name, settings and touchscreen hardware signals if you agree.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Google Pixel 10 family screen or touch input is not working correctly
For a Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL or 10 Pro Fold whose touchscreen has sensitivity issues or does not respond, Google's first checks are: remove the case or screen protector (you may not be able to put it on again), take off gloves, peel off any stickers over the screen or sensors and make sure the screen is clean. Google's model-specific steps for Pixel 9 and later add a Touch diagnostics test under Display and touch, a system update, gesture navigation sensitivity and Adaptive touch, where the Pixel 8a and earlier use Screen protector mode instead. If the fault only appears in one app, contact that app's developer.
Displays by model
Wikipedia lists the Pixel 10 at 6.3 inches, 2424 by 1080, 60 to 120 Hz; the 10 Pro at 6.3 inches LTPO, 1 to 120 Hz, 3,300 nits peak; the 10 Pro XL at 6.8 inches, 2992 by 1344; and the 10 Pro Fold with a 6.4-inch cover and 8.0-inch inner display.
Glass and water resistance
All four are IP68; the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the first foldable with IP68, using a gearless hinge, and its inner display uses ultra-thin glass.
Part numbers
Google orders a screen by the phone's model number and IMEI under Settings, About phone; iFixit sells genuine screens by part number for DIY repair.
Tools and supplies
A soft, dry cloth, a second USB-C charger and cable, a flashlight to check the port and a towel to rest the phone on. No screwdriver and no opening the phone.
Repair cost
9to5Google's report of iFixit's Pixel 10 part prices: a screen at $159.99 (Pixel 10) or $249.99 (Pixel 10 Pro), and a back glass at $89.99 or $99.99. Google quotes its own repair price in a repair request.

These steps also fit the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

Stop boundary

When this stops being a self-service repair

  • !If touch still fails after the diagnostic, an update and Safe mode, start a repair request with Google or an authorized repairer
  • !If the glass is cracked, lines appear or the screen flickers, book a screen repair; iFixit's Pixel 10 screen part is $159.99 and the Pixel 10 Pro's $249.99 per 9to5Google, before labor
  • !If the fault is on the Pro Fold's inner display, ask Google for a repair quote before paying, because the inner screen is a separate, more expensive part
