Google Pixel 8a biometric unlock is not working

Google Pixel 8a biometric unlock is not working: sensor obstruction, enrolled appearance/finger, protector, environment and hardware should be separated. Scoped to GKV4X/G6GPR.

The Pixel 8a unlocks with an under-display fingerprint sensor and with face unlock, and Google's page on the fingerprint sensor leads with two checks: press and hold your finger firmly on the sensor until the phone unlocks, and keep the screen and your finger clean and dry. Wet or greasy fingers and a dirty screen are the main causes of misreads. Google also warns that a screen protector that is not Made for Google certified can interfere with the sensor, so remove it to test. If the fingerprint still fails, delete your fingerprints and add them again in Settings, Security and privacy, Device unlock, Face and fingerprint unlock, adding the same finger several times with different pressures, and add a second copy of your main finger.

For face unlock, check that the camera is clear and the lighting good.

The checks in more detail

When you enrol, press the way you normally hold the phone, not a light fingertip press, and cover the whole finger pad across the enrolment so that the sensor learns the edges as well. If the sensor works at home but not outdoors in cold weather, warm the finger and wipe the screen, since cold, dry skin reads poorly. On the 8a the sensor is an optical one that lights the screen to photograph the fingertip, so it does best with a screen that is not at its minimum brightness and a finger that is not too dry.

Because the Pixel 8a is an affordable model, many owners buy cheap tempered glass, and glass with a poor adhesive layer leaves air bubbles over the sensor that stop it working; replacing it with a certified film fixes this at once.

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Whether a protector is fitted
  • How many fingerprints are enrolled
  • Whether face unlock works
  • Whether it began after an update

  1. Clean the screen and your finger

    Reversible

    Use a soft cloth.

  2. Remove the protector

    Reversible

    Test on the bare screen.

  3. Press firmly

    Reversible

Hold your finger on the sensor until the phone unlocks.

  4. Delete and re-add the fingerprint

    Reversible

Settings, Security and privacy, Device unlock.

  5. Add the same finger twice

    Reversible

    It improves recognition.

  6. Restart and update

    Reversible

    Install the latest update.

  7. Enrol the way you hold the phone

    Reversible

Place the finger as you naturally do, and lift and reposition during the guided steps so the whole pad is recorded.

  8. Re-enrol in the conditions where it fails

    Reversible

Add the same finger again with slightly dry or cold skin to widen recognition.

  9. Look for air bubbles over the sensor

    Reversible

Hold the phone to the light and check for bubbles or gaps over the sensor area; replace a bubbly guard.

  10. Check the screen brightness

    Reversible

Raise brightness slightly so the optical sensor has light to read by.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Under the glass
The sensor reads through the display, so a protector matters.
Enrol twice
A second copy of the main finger helps.
Cold or dry skin
Very dry or cold fingers read poorly, so warm them or add the fingerprint again in similar conditions.
Face unlock
Face unlock on the 8a is convenient but Google rates fingerprint as the more secure method for payments.
Skin condition
Dry or cold skin and wet fingers cause most misreads.
An optical sensor
It photographs the finger using the screen's light.
Cheap glass
Poor adhesive leaves bubbles that block the sensor.

Stop boundary

When this stops being a self-service repair

  • !If the sensor fails with no protector and a re-enrolment, book service
  • !If face unlock fails too, ask Google
  • !Use the PIN meanwhile
