Google Pixel 9 will not pair or stay connected over Bluetooth

Google Pixel 9 will not pair or stay connected over Bluetooth: accessory pairing state, competing hosts, profile support and radio issues should be isolated. Scoped to GUR25/G1B60.

The Pixel 9 has Pixel Watch and Pixel Buds integration, and its Bluetooth problems are a stale pairing, a Fast Pair prompt that never appears and watch syncing that stops. The Pixel 9 Pro series had a documented Bluetooth problem with terrible range, static and dropouts at launch, and the workaround reported was to turn off Ultra-wideband, which interfered; the standard Pixel 9 is a related model and some owners report the same behavior.

The checks in more detail

Google's page lists the steps: toggle Bluetooth, forget and pair the device again, restart, and run Bluetooth diagnostics. For a Pixel Watch, open the Pixel Watch app and reconnect from there. Check that Fast Pair is on. If dropouts continue, test with UWB off in Connected devices, Connection preferences, and keep the phone updated. Magnetic cases and Pixelsnap-type accessories near the antenna can reduce range, so test bare. A network reset is the last software step.

For the Pixel Watch, the Pixel Watch app can show the connection and its own Bluetooth status, and a watch that is connected in the app but not syncing may need a restart of the watch from its settings, which refreshes the link without unpairing. If the phone is also a Pixel Watch host, remember that the watch uses its own Bluetooth link and sometimes Wi-Fi, so a watch that is connected but slow to deliver notifications may be on Wi-Fi only; open the watch's connection settings and make sure Bluetooth is selected as the primary link.

Keep both devices updated, since Google ships fixes for the pairing in its monthly releases. A cheap test for the Pixel 9's radio is to pair it with a second, different Bluetooth device, such as a speaker, and play audio from across the room: if the speaker holds a steady link at the same distance where earbuds drop, the phone's radio is fine and the earbuds or their case position are the cause. Record what you find so Google's support can see it.
