OnePlus Open screen or touch input is not working correctly

OnePlus Open screen or touch input is not working correctly: one app/region, moisture, protector/case, charger interference and display hardware should be separated. Scoped to CPH2551 and regional variants.

The OnePlus Open has two screens, and a touch fault first needs you to say which. OnePlus describes the main 7.82-inch display as Ultra Thin Glass over the flexible OLED with TPU shielding and an anti-reflection screen protector, and its spec page lists a pre-applied screen protector; the cover glass is Ceramic Guard. Google's screen article gives the steps for either: check the screen is not cracked, chipped or damaged, take off any case, screen protector you added, gloves and stickers, and clean the screen. Then restart by holding the power button about 30 seconds, and if touch still fails try safe mode, and uninstall recently downloaded apps one by one if it works there.

Test the affected part by dragging a finger corner to corner over about ten seconds. A factory reset is the last step.

Differential

Likely causes of “OnePlus Open screen or touch input is not working correctly”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

A protector added on top of the factory one

What separates it The main screen misses touches or feels dull under the finger compared with the cover screen

How to confirm OnePlus lists a pre-applied protector; remove anything you added, as Google says to take off protectors

  2. 2

    A case, gloves or stickers

What separates it Touch is patchy near the edges of the screen while the middle of the display responds normally

How to confirm Google says to take them off and clean the screen

  3. 3

    A downloaded app

What separates it Touch fails only in some apps or after an install

How to confirm Test in safe mode; if it works there, remove recent apps one by one

  4. 4

    A software freeze

What separates it The screen is stuck but the phone is on

How to confirm Hold the power button for about 30 seconds until the phone restarts by itself

  5. 5

    Nearly full storage

What separates it The phone lags, stutters or freezes when opening apps because storage is nearly full

How to confirm Google says a phone can have issues below 10 percent free

  6. 6

A damaged display or hinge area

What separates it Lines, dead patches, a crack or a raised edge

How to confirm Book service; physical damage is not covered by the replacement benefit

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Whether the fault is on the main screen, the cover screen or both
  • Whether the factory protector is intact and whether anything was added
  • Whether the phone was dropped, bent or wet
  • Whether the fault also happens in safe mode

  1. Say which screen fails

    Reversible

Say which screen fails, by testing the cover screen and the main screen separately, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  2. Check and clean the screen

    Reversible

Check and clean the screen, by looking for cracks, then removing anything you added, gloves and stickers, and cleaning it.

  3. Restart

    Reversible

Hold the power button for about 30 seconds until the phone restarts, which clears a frozen screen without losing data.

  4. Try safe mode

    Reversible

If touch works in safe mode, an app you installed is the likely cause, so remove recent apps one at a time and test.

  5. Run the drag test

    Reversible

Run the drag test, by dragging slowly from one corner to the opposite over about ten seconds.

  6. Update and check storage

    Reversible

Update the system and apps, and free some space, since a nearly full phone and old software both make touch sluggish.

  7. Book service

    Reversible

If the fault persists after these steps, request a repair, because a damaged display or digitiser cannot be fixed with settings.
