Samsung Galaxy A-series family storage is full or the device cannot install updates

Samsung Galaxy A-series family (A55, A54, A35, A25) storage is full or the device cannot install updates: large media, downloads, app caches and system-update reserve should be measured before deletion. Scoped to SM-A556* (A55), SM-A546* (A54), SM-A356* (A35), SM-A256* (A25).

When a Galaxy A55, A54, A35 or A25 says storage is full, Samsung's order is: open Settings, Device care, Storage and clear the biggest categories, back up photos and videos to a cloud service and delete the local copies, clear app caches, remove apps you no longer use, and run Device care, Memory, Clean now. Unlike the S-series, the A-series can take a memory card: the A25 lists microSD up to 1 TB and Wikipedia says the A55, A54 and A35 have a hybrid tray, on some models SIM 1 plus microSD, so Samsung's move-to-SD-card steps apply where the slot exists. Internal storage is 128 or 256 GB on all four.

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • The model and its storage size from Settings, Device care, Storage
  • Whether the SIM tray takes a microSD card on your model
  • Whether Google Drive, OneDrive or Samsung Cloud sync is on, and whether uploads have finished
  • The software version and any low storage message text

Try in this order

0 of 7 completed
  1. See what uses the space

    Reversible

Open Settings, Device care, Storage to see the categories. Samsung says deleting unnecessary images, videos, audio recordings and documents clears the most space.

  2. Back up before deleting

    Reversible

Open Settings, Accounts and backup and sync to Google Drive, or sync a OneDrive account, and confirm the upload finished before you delete local copies.

  3. Clear app caches

    Reversible

Open Settings, Apps, choose the app, tap Storage and tap Clear cache. Samsung says this erases temporary data only; Clear data deletes the app's saved data.

  4. Use a memory card if your model takes one

    Reversible

With a microSD card inserted, open My Files and move files to the SD card, as Samsung describes. The A25 supports cards up to 1 TB; on the A55, A54 and A35 the tray is hybrid, so a card replaces the second SIM on some models.

  5. Delete and empty the Trash

    Reversible

In Device care, Storage, select the files, tap Delete and Move to Trash, then empty the Trash so the space is actually freed.

  6. Clean memory and optimize

    Reversible

Clean memory and optimize, by opening Settings, Device care, Memory and tapping Clean now, then tapping Optimize now.

  7. Move files to a computer if needed

    Reversible

Copy large videos to a computer over USB-C, check that the copies open and then delete them from the phone.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Storage by model
Wikipedia lists 128 and 256 GB on the A55 (8 or 12 GB RAM), A54 (6 or 8 GB, UFS 2.2), A35 (6 or 8 GB, UFS 2.2) and A25 (6 or 8 GB, UFS 2.2), with microSD up to 1 TB on the A25.
Card slots
Wikipedia says the A55 and A35 have either a hybrid dual SIM tray (SIM 1 plus SIM 2 or SIM 1 plus microSD) or a single SIM tray depending on the model, and calls the A35 the last Galaxy A3x phone to support microSD.
Part numbers
Storage cannot be upgraded by a part number; the routes are a memory card where fitted, a cloud plan or a computer. Samsung asks for the SM- model number from Settings, About phone if you contact it.
Tools and supplies
A microSD card where the tray takes one, a computer with a USB-C cable, a Wi-Fi connection for cloud sync and a SIM ejector pin. No screwdriver or cleaning app is needed.
Repair cost
Storage is not repaired or upgraded, and Samsung's US list has no A-series price; a repair shop's 2026 table lists $139 for an A54 screen if you are servicing the phone anyway.

These steps also fit the Galaxy A54 5G, Galaxy A25 5G.

  • !If backups never complete, check the cloud plan and Wi-Fi rather than deleting local copies
  • !If the phone is full and cannot update, move photos to a memory card or a computer first and then free space
