Epson printers scanner is not found or scanning fails

Epson printers (EcoTank, Expression and WorkForce Pro) scanner is not found or scanning fails: local scanner operation, connection, driver/app, permissions and destination storage should be separated. Scoped to EcoTank ET-4850 (C11CJ60202), with the other Epson EcoTank, Expression, SureColor and WorkForce Pro models in the model notes.

Epson scanning uses Epson Scan 2 on the computer, and Epson's printer problems page describes Epson Event Manager, a utility that starts the Epson Scan utility from the printer's control panel: Epson Scan or Epson Scan 2 must be installed before you use it. If the scan button on the printer does nothing, install Event Manager, which is on Epson's support page for your model, and check it is running. Epson's status list also covers a scan error:

The checks in more detail

E-02 means a scanner error has occurred, so turn the product off and on again. I-60 says the computer may not support WSD (Web Services for Devices): Scan to PC (WSD) works only with English versions of Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.x, Windows 7 and Windows Vista, and you should check the product is connected correctly. Epson's user's guide covers Cannot Scan Over a Network, which usually means a firewall blocks the scanner or the computer and printer are on different networks.

Check the printer and computer share a network, allow Epson Scan 2 and Event Manager through the firewall, restart both and try USB. If E-11 or E-12 shows, an ink pad needs replacing but scanning still works. For scan quality, clean the glass and lid backing with a soft dry cloth, place the original face down at the corner mark and choose a suitable resolution. Update Epson Scan 2 with Epson Software Updater.

Scan one page at a moderate resolution first as a test, since very high resolutions take long and can stall on a network connection. Keep the glass clean with a soft dry cloth. If the scan button on the printer does nothing but scanning from the computer works, the Event Manager utility or its permissions are the likely cause. Save scans to a known folder, and if scans seem to vanish, check the destination setting in Epson Scan 2, since the file is often saved where you did not look.
