Generac serial numbers don't encode the age — here's what does

Generac's own support page confirms the serial number is sequential, not date-coded. The real manufacture date is a separate eight-digit field on the same data tag.

Generac does not encode the manufacture date in its standby-generator serial number at all, and Generac's own support page says so directly: the serial is a plain sequential production number with no embedded year, week or month. The real manufacture date lives in a separate eight-digit field on the same data tag, labeled PROD DATE or MANUFACTURING DATE and written as year, then month, then day with no separators — a tag reading 20180621 means June 21, 2018.

If that field is missing, damaged or was never printed on an older tag, Generac's own page directs owners to contact Generac support directly with the serial number, since only Generac's internal records, not the serial number itself, can supply the date in that case. This is the opposite kind of finding from every other brand on this page: there is no formula to compute here, only a second field to read correctly and a fallback contact path when that field is not available.

Try it

Decode your own serial number

It runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Enter at least four characters of the serial number to see an estimated manufacture date.

What this covers

  • Generac home standby generators whose data tag shows a separate 8-digit PROD DATE or MANUFACTURING DATE field, read as YYYYMMDD
  • Confirming that the serial number itself is sequential and carries no date information, per Generac's own page
  • Contacting Generac support directly when the date field is missing or unreadable

What it does not cover

  • ×Any attempt to compute a date from the Generac serial number itself — Generac's own page states this is not possible
  • ×Portable Generac generators, which this page has not separately confirmed use the same data-tag layout
  • ×A guarantee that Generac support can supply a date for a very old unit outside their retained records

  1. Locate the data tag

    Reversible

Find the generator's data tag on the exterior of the enclosure.

  2. Look for the PROD DATE or MANUFACTURING DATE field

    Reversible

This is a separate eight-digit field from the serial number, read as year, then month, then day with no separators. 20180621 means June 21, 2018.

  3. Do not try to compute a date from the serial number itself

    Reversible

Generac's own page confirms the serial number does not encode a date — treating any part of it as a year or week will produce a wrong answer.

  4. Contact Generac support if the date field is missing

    Reversible

Provide the full serial number; only Generac's internal records can supply the date when the tag itself doesn't show one.

Exact questions

Questions about Generac serial numbers don't encode the age — here's what does

Is there really no way to get the age from a Generac serial number alone?+

Correct, per Generac's own support page. Use the separate PROD DATE/MANUFACTURING DATE field on the same tag instead.

What if the data tag doesn't show a PROD DATE field?+

Contact Generac support with the full serial number; their internal records can supply the date in that case.

Does Generac keep manufacturing records forever?+

This page does not assume so — an old enough unit may fall outside what Generac's support team can look up, though Generac's own page did not state a specific cutoff at the time this was checked.

Why do Generac serials not show the age?+

Generac serial numbers are not built around a manufacture date, so the number alone does not give the age. Other identifiers such as the model number and the unit's paperwork help date the unit.

What can I use instead of the serial to date it?+

Look at the installation records, the permit, the warranty registration and the label on the unit. A Generac dealer can look up the unit in their systems using the serial and model number.

Should I have a dealer check it?+

Yes, for warranty or parts questions. A qualified dealer can confirm what the serial means for your specific model and can check service history.

Where is the serial number?+

On the data label on the generator's enclosure or panel. Photograph the label for your records.
