ADT Base shared users or family members cannot control it

ADT Base shared users or family members cannot control it: invitation/account, home membership, role/permission and platform region should be separated. Scoped to ADTBASE502R0.

ADT's user roles article explains sharing with people. ADT Blu supports multiple unique users with security codes so you can track who arms and disarms and who has access to settings and devices. Only the Primary and Admin roles can invite, add and remove users. The Primary user, such as the account holder, has one four-digit code, their own login and complete access.

The checks in more detail

An Admin, invited by the Primary, has a separate four-digit code and login and can arm and disarm, stream and manage media, access settings and notifications and create rules. A Standard user, such as a child or a close friend, has a code and login and can view live and saved media, arm and disarm and control their own notification method. A Basic user, such as a dog walker or a guest, gets a four-digit code that only works at the Base, Keypad or touchscreen, with no app login.

A Duress user has a code that works only from the touchpad and needs professional monitoring, and it should be shared with the household. Manage users in the ADT+ app or at plus.adt.com. Remove people when they no longer need access, and change codes if compromised. Keep a written list of users and their roles and review it twice a year. A new user who cannot log in may have used a different email. Change any code a former resident knew.

A Basic user's code works only at the Base or keypad, which suits a dog walker who should not have the app. Because each user has their own code, the system can show who armed or disarmed and when, which is a useful record for a household with children who come and go. Review the user list whenever the household changes, and remember Basic codes cannot log in, so give the app only to those who need it.

Differential

Likely causes of “ADT Base shared users or family members cannot control it”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

    A code shared too widely

What separates it It is unclear who armed or disarmed the system because everyone in the household uses the same code

How to confirm Give each person their own user code so that the history shows exactly who armed and disarmed

  2. 2

A Basic user needs the app

What separates it A person with only a Basic user code cannot log in to the ADT+ app because Basic users have no app login

How to confirm Make them a Standard user, who can have an app login, if they need to control the system from a phone

  3. 3

    No professional monitoring

What separates it The Duress option is missing for a user because the account has no professional monitoring plan

How to confirm Add the Pro-Protect plan, since a Duress code only works when the system is professionally monitored

  4. 4

    A former resident

What separates it A former resident's old code still works and can arm and disarm the system after they have left

How to confirm Delete the user from user management the same day so the code stops working straight away

  5. 5

    A limited role

What separates it A user cannot change settings or add devices because their role does not allow it

How to confirm Raise the person's role to Admin if they should be able to change settings and manage devices

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • The user role of the person who has the problem
  • The code that was used and by which person
  • Whether the person has an ADT+ app login
  • Whether the account has professional monitoring

0 of 7 completed
  1. Open user management

    Reversible

Open user management in the ADT+ app or portal, where every user, their role and their code are listed and can be edited by an Admin or Primary user.

  2. Invite an Admin or Standard user

    Reversible

Invite an Admin or Standard user with their own login, so they can use the app and their actions are recorded against their own name.

  3. Give guests a Basic code

    Reversible

Give guests and short-term visitors a Basic code, which works at the Base or keypad only and does not need an app login.

  4. Set a Duress code

    Reversible

Set a Duress code for professionally monitored systems, so that a person forced to disarm can send a silent emergency signal.

  5. Remove users who leave

    Reversible

Remove users who leave the household or stop needing access on the same day, so that their codes cannot be used again.

  6. Track who arms

    Reversible

Track who arms and disarms the system by giving each person a unique code, because the history then shows the name behind every action.

  7. Contact ADT

    Reversible

Contact ADT if a user cannot be added or a role will not change, and have the user's name and role to hand before you call.
