What is true of this model and changes how you fix it

These are the properties that decide which procedure applies. Each is read from the manufacturer’s own published figures for this model, not carried over from a sibling that shares its retail name.

Air quality monitor

ecobee states a built-in air quality monitor that alerts when air quality is poor and offers improvement tips. This is the feature that sets Premium apart from Enhanced, which has no air quality sensing at all — an air-quality complaint on an Enhanced unit is a false expectation, not a fault.

Included SmartSensor

Ships with one SmartSensor in the box, over a dedicated 915MHz radio. Enhanced sells SmartSensors separately and includes none — so room-level temperature balancing works on a Premium out of the box, and does not on an Enhanced until one is bought and paired.

Built-in speaker and mic

Has a built-in microphone with Alexa built in, and Siri support via a HomePod or HomePod mini. It also does intercom — sending a voice message to a HomePod mini or Alexa device elsewhere in the house — and streams Spotify Connect, Amazon Music or Bluetooth audio through its own speaker. Enhanced has none of this; a request to "talk to" the thermostat only makes sense on Premium.

Display and build

A 4 in., 540 x 540 pixel color touchscreen in a die-cast zinc alloy metal frame, 103.89mm x 103.89mm x 25.9mm — thicker than the Enhanced's 23.88mm because of that metal frame.

Connectivity

Dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n at 2.4GHz, 802.11 a/n/ac at 5GHz), Bluetooth 5.0, and a 915MHz radio for SmartSensor communication, with WPA/WPA2/WPA3 support.

Power and HVAC

Wired 24VAC through C and Rc terminals; the included Power Extender Kit (PEK) means a dedicated C-wire does not have to be run. Supports 2H/2C conventional systems, heat pumps with 2-stage auxiliary heat, boilers and PTAC/fan-coil units, plus one accessory wire for a humidifier, dehumidifier or ventilator.

Wi-Fi

Joins on 2.4 GHz. A phone on 5 GHz cannot hand credentials to it reliably during setup, and a router that steers clients between bands under one network name will produce intermittent joins that look like a hardware fault.

Power path

Drawn from the HVAC control wiring. A dedicated common wire supplies continuous power; without one, the thermostat charges from the heating circuit and can hold enough charge for the display while failing at sustained radio use.

Microphone

Carries a microphone with a hardware mute. A muted microphone is a physical switch state that no app setting overrides, and is the first thing to check for any voice or audio symptom.
