Philips Hue Hue motion sensor troubleshooting
Choose the symptom actually shown by SML001/SML003 and regional variants. Hue motion sensor; a battery-powered Zigbee sensor with no network connection of its own — it talks only to the Bridge. Error codes remain separate records because the same characters can mean different things on another platform.

Which units this covers, and how to tell yours is one of them
Every answer below is scoped to these model identifiers. A neighbouring model in the same line can use a different part, a different reset sequence or a different radio, so matching the identifier before following a procedure is the step that decides whether the rest of the page applies to you.
- Model numbers and patterns
- SML001/SML003 and regional variants
- What that covers
- Hue motion sensor; a battery-powered Zigbee sensor with no network connection of its own — it talks only to the Bridge.
- Not applicable to this hardware
- This Hue motion sensor does not have the hardware for: will not stay connected to Wi-Fi; video is blurry, dark, frozen or delayed. Those symptoms have no page here for this model rather than a page that guesses.
Published specification
What is true of this model and changes how you fix it
These are the properties that decide which procedure applies. Each is read from the manufacturer’s own published figures for this model, not carried over from a sibling that shares its retail name.
- Battery
- Two AAA batteries, included, rated for a minimum 2-year life.
- Indoor only — IP42
- Rated IP42, which is an indoor rating. Philips sells a separate Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor at IP54 for exterior use — an indoor sensor mounted outside is being used outside its rating, not malfunctioning in bad weather.
- Built-in light sensor
- Beyond motion, it has a daylight sensor that can be configured with a light-level threshold so lights don't turn on when it's already bright enough. A motion sensor that "isn't triggering" in daylight may be doing exactly what its daylight threshold is set to do.
- Mounting and range
- Wall or standing mount with a magnetic back for flexible placement. Philips notes that mounting height affects coverage — placed higher, it detects motion across a wider area — which is the first thing to check when detection feels inconsistent from one spot to another.
- Radio
- Zigbee and Bluetooth to the Bridge/system, with no independent network connection — the same pattern as other Hue accessories, so a sensor that stops reporting is a Bridge or pairing question before it's a sensor fault.
- Power path
- Internal or removable battery. Every capability that costs current — night vision, higher stream quality, longer recordings, frequent events — is paid for in runtime, so a change in behaviour after a settings change is usually a power consequence rather than a fault. Cold weather reduces usable capacity sharply.

Exact questions
Questions that only have an answer for the Hue motion sensor
Each answer below uses this model’s own published figures. The same question asked about a different model in the line has a different answer, which is why it is answered here rather than on a general page.
My motion sensor isn't turning the lights on during the day.+
Check its light-level (daylight) threshold before assuming a fault — it has a built-in daylight sensor that can be configured to skip triggering lights when there's already enough ambient light.
Can I put this Hue Motion Sensor outside?+
No — it's rated IP42, an indoor rating. Philips sells a separate Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor rated IP54 for outdoor use; using the indoor model outside means it isn't built to handle that exposure.
Detection feels inconsistent depending on where I mount it.+
Mounting height matters — Philips states that placing it higher gives it a wider detection area. Try relocating or raising it before troubleshooting it as faulty.
How long does the battery last?+
Two AAA batteries are included, rated for a minimum of 2 years. It uses Zigbee and Bluetooth to communicate with the Bridge and has no network connection of its own.
Is this the same sensor used in Bridge Pro's MotionAware feature?+
No — MotionAware is a Bridge Pro feature that uses compatible Hue light bulbs themselves to detect motion. This is a dedicated battery-powered sensor accessory, a separate product that works with any Hue Bridge.
