How loud is the Extra Siren?+
Up to 105 dB, which is louder than the Base Station's own siren. Volume is one reason to add one; placement is the other — a siren outside or at the far end of the house covers ground the Base Station cannot.
Can the Extra Siren go outside?+
Yes — SimpliSafe specifies it as water-resistant for outdoor use, which makes it one of the few components not restricted to indoors. Water resistant still is not waterproof, so a position with some shelter will outlast one without.
What batteries does it need?+
4 AA Alkaline, and SimpliSafe lists them as required rather than included. There is no mains option, so battery maintenance is not optional on this device — and at up to 1 year of life, it is an annual job.
Can I use it for anything other than alarms?+
Yes — SimpliSafe documents customizing it to mimic door chimes. That also has a practical benefit: a siren you hear operating in normal use is a siren you know still works, which is not true of one that only ever sounds during an alarm.
