- How it detects
- Acoustically — it listens for the distinct sound of glass shattering, at up to 20 ft. It is not a vibration or contact sensor, so it does not need to be on the window itself.
- A hard limit
- SimpliSafe states plainly that the Glassbreak Sensor was designed for standard glass and WILL NOT detect breaking tempered, laminated or shatterproof glass. Those break with a different acoustic signature. On a home with laminated or toughened glazing this sensor does not do the job it was bought for, and no setting changes that.
- Battery
- One CR123A 3V Lithium cell, included, with up to 3 years of life depending on usage. Note CR123A — not the CR-2032 coin cell used by the Entry, Water and Temperature sensors, and a shorter rated life than any of them.
- Size
- 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.25 inches, peel-and-stick installation.
- Power path
- Internal or removable battery. Every capability that costs current — night vision, higher stream quality, longer recordings, frequent events — is paid for in runtime, so a change in behaviour after a settings change is usually a power consequence rather than a fault. Cold weather reduces usable capacity sharply.
- Radio
- A manufacturer-specific sub-GHz radio to the base station rather than Wi-Fi. It travels further through structure than Wi-Fi does and is unaffected by router changes — which means a Wi-Fi problem and a sensor problem are genuinely separate investigations here.

Will the Glassbreak Sensor detect my windows breaking?+
Only if they are standard glass. SimpliSafe states explicitly that it will not detect breaking tempered, laminated or shatterproof glass, because those break with a different acoustic signature. If your glazing is toughened or laminated — common in doors, conservatories and newer builds — this sensor cannot do what it was bought for.
How close does it need to be to the window?+
Within 20 ft, per SimpliSafe's specification. It listens for the sound rather than sensing the glass, so it does not go on the window itself — one sensor can cover several windows in the same room if all of them are inside that radius.
What battery does it take?+
One CR123A 3V Lithium cell, rated up to 3 years. That is a different cell from the CR-2032 used by the Entry, Water and Temperature sensors, and a shorter rated life — worth knowing before you buy a pack of the wrong thing.
Why does it have a shorter battery life than my other sensors?+
It is doing more work. An acoustic sensor listens continuously, where a magnetic contact sensor only reports when it changes state. SimpliSafe rates this one at up to 3 years against up to 5 for the contact sensors, and that is the reason.
