Which units this covers, and how to tell yours is one of them

What is true of this model and changes how you fix it
These are the properties that decide which procedure applies. Each is read from the manufacturer’s own published figures for this model, not carried over from a sibling that shares its retail name.
- Device type — streaming player, not a TV
- An entry streaming box for a TV's HDMI port; no panel of its own, so picture settings live on the TV. Runs Roku OS.
- Resolution — 1080p HD only, NOT 4K
- The decisive limit: the base Express (3960) outputs Full HD 1080p only — it cannot do 4K or any HDR. A '4K content looks soft / won't play in 4K' complaint on this model is the device ceiling, not a fault. The Express 4K, Stick 4K or Ultra are the 4K options.
- Connectivity / hardware
- The most basic hardware in the range (512MB memory), single/dual-band Wi-Fi, no Ethernet. Its smaller memory is why it feels slower and is more prone to app slowdowns than the 4K models; a restart (Settings › System › Power › System restart) clears most of those.

Exact questions
Questions that only have an answer for the Roku Express
Each answer below uses this model’s own published figures. The same question asked about a different model in the line has a different answer, which is why it is answered here rather than on a general page.
Why won't my Roku Express play 4K?+
The base Roku Express (model 3960) is a 1080p Full HD device — it has no 4K or HDR capability at all, so 4K content is streamed to it at 1080p. That is the hardware limit, not a setting or a fault. For 4K you need the Roku Express 4K, Streaming Stick 4K or Ultra.
