Roku TVs and players: remote, apps, picture and Wi-Fi

Roku powers TVs from several makers and its own players, and the directory lists model pages. Owners report a remote that does not respond, an app that crashes, a black screen, buffering and a TV that restarts. The model pages give the checks.

For the remote, replace the batteries and re-pair it from the Settings menu or with the mobile app. For apps, remove and add the channel. For a black screen, check the input and the HDMI cable and restart the TV by unplugging it. For buffering, check the Wi-Fi signal in Settings, Network.

The model is on a label at the back, and Settings, System, About shows the software version. Roku updates automatically when connected.

Roku sells a number of players and powers TVs from other brands, so the model name on your device is the key to finding the right steps. A Roku Express and a Roku Ultra, for example, differ in their ports and remotes. If the player will not start, try another HDMI port and another cable, plug it into a wall outlet rather than the TV's USB port if it uses a power adapter, and check the status light on the player. Keep the software up to date and sign out of channels you no longer use.
