GE dishwasher does not clean dishes

GE dishwasher does not clean dishes: fill, circulation, spray-arm movement, loading, detergent and water temperature must all be present. Scoped to PDT785S*.

For dishes that are not clean on the GE Profile PDT785, GE's troubleshooting table lists nine causes: a clogged Ultra-Fine or Fine Filter, low inlet water temperature, temporarily low water pressure (normal is 20 to 120 psi), a clogged air gap or disposer, a high drain loop or missing air gap, improper rack loading that blocks the detergent dispenser or wash arms, poor performing detergent, an overloaded or improperly loaded dishwasher and too little detergent. The manual says no pre-rinsing of normal food soil is required, but hard soils, bones and leafy vegetables should be scraped off.

Differential

Likely causes of “GE dishwasher does not clean dishes”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

A clogged Ultra-Fine or Fine Filter

What separates it The dishes feel gritty and the wash performance has dropped because the Ultra Fine or Fine Filter is clogged

How to confirm Clean the filters; GE says every other month or more depending on use

  2. 2

Low inlet water temperature or low pressure

What separates it There is a grease film and dull dishes, and slow filling, because of low inlet water temperature or low pressure

How to confirm Let the hot tap run until hot and check pressure is 20 to 120 psi; select Boost

  3. 3

Improper loading blocking arms or the dispenser

What separates it Food remains where dishes shielded each other because improper loading blocks the arms or the dispenser

How to confirm Load as the Loading section shows, without blocking the wash arms or dispenser

  4. 4

    Poor or too little detergent

What separates it There is residue and film after the cycle because of poor or too little detergent

How to confirm Use high quality detergent such as tablets or packets in the right amount

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Whether dishes feel gritty and when the filters were last cleaned
  • The water temperature and the water pressure
  • Which cycle and options you used and how the racks were loaded

  1. Clean the filters

    Reversible

Remove the bottom rack, twist the Ultra-Fine Filter assembly counterclockwise and lift it out, rinse it with warm soapy water and a sponge. Lift the Fine Filter (mesh plate) out from under the two rear tabs, rinse it, and replace it under the tabs.

  2. Check water temperature and pressure

    Reversible

Run the hot tap nearest the dishwasher until the temperature stops rising, then start and turn off the faucet. Select Boost if available. Pressure should be 20 to 120 psi.

  3. Load correctly

    Reversible

Scrape hard soils, bones, toothpicks and seeds, but do not pre-rinse normal soil. Make sure large dishware does not block the detergent dispenser or wash arms.

  4. Use a good detergent in the right amount

    Reversible

GE recommends high quality tablet or packet detergents such as Cascade Platinum ActionPacs or Finish Quantum, and says old or damp powder detergent is a cause.

  5. Check the air gap and drain

    Reversible

Clean the air gap or flush the disposer, and check the drain loop or air gap is installed as the Installation Instructions show.

Model-specific

Filters in the manual
The Ultra-Fine Filter assembly may be 2-piece with an additional Filter Basket for food particles: twist the basket counterclockwise to unlock it, pull it out, discard food, rinse and replace it and twist it clockwise to lock. Scouring pads or brushes can scratch the Fine Filter, but a soft brush or sponge may be needed for hard water calcium deposits.
