Dishwasher problems: cleaning, drainage and smells

Start with the easy checks: run the hot tap until it is hot before starting, clean the filter, check the spray arms spin freely and use the detergent and rinse aid the manual names. A detergent door that does not open or a pod left in the dispenser is often caused by an item blocking the door. Water in the base can be normal under the filter after a cycle. Leaks, a door that pops open or an air gap that overflows into the sink need the drain path checked, and electrical or pump faults belong to a technician. A dishwasher cleans through a chain: hot water in, detergent released, spray arms turning, a clear filter and a working drain. If dishes come out dirty, check each link: run the hot tap first, use fresh detergent, make sure the spray arms spin freely, clean the filter and check that the drain hose is not kinked. A white film or cloudy glass often means hard water or too little rinse aid, while a smell comes from food in the filter or the drain.

Loading and detergent matter as much as the machine. Face the dirtiest dishes toward the center, keep tall items from blocking the spray arms, do not nest bowls and cups, and use the amount of detergent the label gives for your water. Soft water needs less detergent and hard water needs more plus rinse aid. Pods and tablets need the dispenser door to open freely; a pod stuck in the dispenser usually means an item blocked the door. If the dishwasher smells, clean the filter and run a cleaning cycle with a dishwasher cleaner; if it leaves a film, increase the rinse aid.
