GE dishwashers: filters, drying and cycles

Dirty dishes point to a clogged manual filter, a blocked spray arm or a tall item shielding the upper arm. Wet dishes point to an empty rinse-aid tank, a plastic tub on the entry model or Heat Dry and Dry Boost being switched off. A long cycle is a heavy soil, a Sanitize or a Heat Dry selection. A smell is trapped food in the filter, a damp seal or a drain loop that lets water back.

GE's label is on the inside edge of the door, and the full model code is longer than the short name. Clean the filter monthly, run the tap hot before starting and use fresh detergent and rinse aid. Scrape plates, do not pre-rinse, and keep plastics off the tub floor.

GE dishwashers range from basic models with a few cycles to stainless-tub models with a third rack and a sanitize cycle, and the directory lists the ones with a guide. Whichever you own, the usual faults begin with the filter, the spray arms and the drain, so the guides start by looking at those before they suggest anything else. A new GE with an electronic control may show a code on its display, which should be written down before the power is switched off.

A dishwasher cleans and dries well when it is loaded with space between dishes, when the filter is rinsed monthly and when the rinse-aid dispenser is kept full. Cloudy glasses are usually hard water, and a spotty load usually means too little rinse aid, so look at those causes before you suspect the machine.
