GE range or oven oven temperature is too hot, too cool or uneven

GE range or oven oven temperature is too hot, too cool or uneven: normal cycling, rack/cookware, preheat and measurement method must be controlled before calibration. Scoped to JB735S*.

GE's manual says a new oven cooks differently from an old one, so follow recipe times and temperatures carefully for the first few uses. If you still think it runs too hot or too cold, you can offset the oven: press Bake and Broil together and hold until the special features menu appears, scroll to OFSt, press the pad to enter, then raise or lower the value and save. GE says the adjustment affects Bake and Convection Bake but not Convection Roast, Broil or Clean. If OFFSET will not appear, the two pads were not touched at the same time and held for 3 seconds. Also check rack position, cookware and level racks.

Differential

Likely causes of “GE range or oven oven temperature is too hot, too cool or uneven”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

A new oven cooks differently from the old one

What separates it Food browns faster or slower than before because a new oven cooks differently from the old one

How to confirm Follow recipes carefully for the first few uses before changing anything

  2. 2

The rack position is wrong or the rack is not level

What separates it There is uneven browning because the rack position is wrong or the rack is not level

How to confirm See the Cooking Guide for the recommended rack position and level the rack

  3. 3

    Wrong cookware or size

What separates it There are burnt bottoms or pale tops because the cookware or the size is wrong

How to confirm Use the cookware types in the Oven Cookware section; dark pans brown more

  4. 4

    The oven temperature needs adjusting

What separates it A thermometer shows a steady error because the oven temperature needs adjusting

How to confirm Use the OFSt setting in Special Features, to correct the oven temperature

  5. 5

    Ingredient substitution

What separates it The recipe results change because ingredients were substituted in the recipe

How to confirm Substituting ingredients can change the outcome, so try the original recipe

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • A thermometer reading at a steady setting
  • Which mode was used and which rack
  • Whether the fan runs and whether the offset was already changed

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Use a thermometer

    Reversible

Place an oven thermometer in the middle of the oven and let the oven preheat fully; different modes use different preheat methods and some, such as Convection Bake, take longer.

  2. Check the rack and pan

    Reversible

Set the rack per the Cooking Guide, level, and use a pan that suits the mode.

  3. Open the special features menu

    Reversible

Open the special features menu, by holding Bake and Broil together for 3 seconds until the menu appears.

  4. Set the offset

    Reversible

Set the offset, by scrolling to OFSt, entering it, raising or lowering it, saving, and exiting the menu.

  5. Retest

    Reversible

Retest, by cooking a familiar recipe and comparing it with the thermometer before changing again.

Convection notes
GE says Auto Recipe Conversion adjusts the programmed recipe temperature in Convection Multi-Bake mode but does not convert baking time and does not adjust Convection Roast.
Troubleshooting quick reference
GE's chart covers several common calls: a crooked oven door happens because the removable door can sit out of position, so reinstall it; the storage drawer will not close if the power cord obstructs it, the rear drawer support sits on top of the guide rail or the soft close mechanism is uncoupled; racks are hard to slide after a self clean, so wipe the edges with a little vegetable oil and never a spray lubricant; the oven takes longer to preheat with more racks, cookware or food or with convection modes; and steam from the vent is normal.

Exact questions

Common questions

How do I adjust the temperature?+

Special features, OFSt: raise or lower the baking temperature and save.

Does it change Broil?+

No. It affects Bake and Convection Bake, not Convection Roast, Broil or Clean.

Why will OFFSET not show?+

Bake and Broil Hi/Lo must be pressed at the same time and held for 3 seconds.

Why does preheat take longer sometimes?+

More racks, cookware or food in the oven, or a mode like convection bake, lengthen it.

Is a tinted oven door glass a problem?+

No. The inner glass has a heat barrier coating that can look tinted.

What is Auto Recipe Conversion?+

A setting that adjusts recipe temperature in Convection Multi-Bake; it converts temperature only, not time.

Should I recheck after a power cut?+

Yes. Run a thermometer test after any outage before trusting the setting.

Should I offset first?+

No. Check the rack, pan and preheat first.
