LG refrigerator makes buzzing, clicking, rattling or knocking noises

LG refrigerator makes buzzing, clicking, rattling or knocking noises: many water, fan, compressor and expansion sounds are normal; location, duration and temperature effect identify abnormal noise. Scoped to LRMVS3006*.

Most sounds from the LG LRMVS3006 are on LG's own list of normal operation, and the manual names them: clicking when the defrost control or thermostat cycles, rattling from refrigerant flow or the water line, whooshing from the evaporator or condenser fan, gurgling refrigerant, popping as the walls expand and contract, sizzling as water drips on the defrost heater, dripping into the drain pan, and a pulsating or high-pitched sound from the efficient compressor. Vibration against a wall or cabinet and an unlevel floor are the ones you can fix.

  1. Compare with LG's normal sounds

    Reversible

Clicking is the defrost control or thermostat, whooshing is the fan, gurgling is refrigerant, popping is wall expansion, sizzling and dripping happen during defrost. LG says all of these are normal operation.

  2. Check clearance

    Reversible

If the side or back touches a cabinet or wall, some normal vibration can be heard. LG says to make sure the sides and back cannot vibrate against them.

  3. Check level and floor

    Reversible

LG says a refrigerator not resting solidly on the floor can rattle. Turn the leveling legs left to raise and right to lower, and use shims if the floor is uneven.

  4. Remove items from the top

    Reversible

Rattling can come from things stored on top of or around the refrigerator. Clear the top and the gaps at the sides.

  5. Check the icemaker

    Reversible

A buzz from time to time can be an icemaker with no water source. If you have no water line, LG says to turn the icemaker off.

Exact questions

Common questions

What is the whooshing sound?+

The evaporator fan circulating air through the compartments, or the condenser fan forcing air over the condenser. LG lists both as normal.

Why does it make a high-pitched sound?+

LG says the high-efficiency compressor may run longer than an older one, and a pulsating or high-pitched sound while running is normal.

Why is there a sizzling sound?+

Water dripping on the defrost heater during a defrost cycle. LG lists it as normal.

Can a wobbly fridge be noisy?+

Yes. LG says a refrigerator not resting solidly on the floor may rattle; adjust the leveling legs or add shims.

Why does it buzz now and then?+

LG says that may happen if there is no water source attached and the icemaker is turned on; turn the icemaker off if you have no water line.

What if the linear compressor is jarred?+

LG lists a linear compressor jarred while running as a cause of a rattling noise that is normal operation, so avoid bumping the unit while it runs.

Does the ice bin pad matter?+

Yes. The pad on the bottom of the ice bin reduces the sound of ice dropping, and LG says not to remove it.
