Electrolux ELFW7637 front-load washer will not spin or leaves clothes soaking wet

Electrolux ELFW7637 front-load washer will not spin or leaves clothes soaking wet: a washer normally refuses full-speed spin when it has not drained, cannot balance the load or cannot prove the door is locked. Scoped to ELFW7637A*.

If the Electrolux ELFW7637 will not spin, Electrolux's checklist gives: the load is too small (add 1 or 2 similar items to help balance the load) and the LED display of CLEAr door, meaning the washer detected something trapped between the door and the door gasket (press Cancel to unlock the door, remove the trapped item, close the door and restart). A wash load too wet after the spin comes from an overloaded washer, a load that is too small, or a load that is out of balance; rearrange it. Heavily soiled items can leave residue in the drum. The washer's oversuds protection keeps rinsing until suds are gone before it spins.

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Read the LED

    Reversible

Read the LED, since CLEAr door means that something is trapped at the gasket, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  2. Add balance

    Reversible

Add balance, with 1 or 2 similar items added to a small load, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  3. Rearrange

    Reversible

Rearrange the load, since an unbalanced load must be redistributed to spin, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  4. Reduce suds

    Reversible

Reduce suds, by using HE detergent only, and less of it, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  5. Restart

    Reversible

Restart, by pressing Start or Pause, and watch the drum, and then test again to see whether it helped.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

High-speed spin
A powerful motor drives the drum to high spin speeds to extract water, and you will hear a sound associated with these speeds; it varies with load size and the cycle selected. A cycle stopped or paused during the spin keeps the door locked for a few minutes until the drum stops, so a door that does not open right after a cancel is not a fault.
Wrinkle Release
On select models Wrinkle Release performs a dry agitation after the final spin to loosen garments from the side of the drum. Extended Refresh also runs periodic rinse and spin segments if the load is left in, so a washer that starts spinning by itself again after the cycle ended is keeping the load fresh, not malfunctioning.
Extended Refresh and spin
If a load is left in the washer after the cycle, Extended Refresh recognizes that it has sat too long and performs a rinse and spin to keep it fresh for up to 12 hours, with the chime sounding periodically. To remove the load during that time you must press Cancel to end the cycle and open the door. A washer that spins again by itself after a cycle has ended is running this feature, not spinning by mistake.
