What is true of this model and changes how you fix it
- Type & capacity — TOP-LOAD5.3 cu. ft. TOP-LOAD washer. The first thing to identify is whether your unit has a tall center AGITATOR post or a low-profile IMPELLER wash plate, because it changes correct loading and the 'clothes tangled / not cleaning' diagnosis: an impeller needs clothes loosely around the plate, not wrapped around a post.
- Top-load behaviorHE top-loaders use a low water level and sense the load, so 'the drum isn't full of water' is normal, not a fill fault. TurboWash 3D and ThinQ Wi-Fi feature on this tier. Lid-lock must engage before a spin; a spin that won't start is often the lid switch.
- Where the WT8405 sitsThe WT8405CW is a 5.3 cubic foot LG top-load washer with TurboWash 3D and ThinQ Wi-Fi. Identify whether it has a tall center agitator post or a low-profile impeller wash plate, because that changes loading and cleaning.
- Why the drum is never fullA high-efficiency top-loader uses little water and senses the load, so the drum is never full of water. Clothes are cleaned by movement, not soaking.
- Where a top-loader's smell comes fromResidue of detergent, softener and body oil on the tub wall, the underside of the lid and the impeller plate feeds mold in a damp drum. The low water level means less rinsing of the tub itself.
- The Tub Clean cycle and its reminderLG washers include a Tub Clean cycle and a reminder. Running it monthly with a washer cleaner keeps the tub wall and the hidden surfaces clean.
- Keeping the tub freshMeasure high-efficiency detergent, leave the lid open between loads, wipe the lid and rim and take wet clothes out promptly.
- Finding WT8405CW on the labelThe label is under the lid or on the back; quote WT8405CW and the serial number.
- TurboWash 3DTurboWash 3D uses jets to speed the wash. The jets spray water over the clothes, so residue that sits in the nozzles and on the tub wall is worth wiping when you clean the tub.
- Impeller or agitatorThe WT8405's 5.3 cubic foot tub may have an impeller plate or an agitator post. Wipe around the base of whichever yours has, because slime collects in the crevice where it meets the tub floor.

Exact questions
Questions that only have an answer for the LG WT8405CW top-load washer
My LG WT8405 doesn't fill with much water.+
That is normal for a high-efficiency top-loader. It uses far less water than old machines and senses the load to add only what is needed, so you will not see the drum fill up — the clothes are cleaned by movement against the impeller or agitator, not by soaking. If it truly is not filling at all (a code, or bone-dry clothes), check the water supply valves and inlet screens.
Why does my LG WT8405 smell?+
Residue and damp let mold grow in the tub.
What is Tub Clean?+
A cycle that cleans the tub with hot water and a washer cleaner.
Why does it use so little water?+
High-efficiency sensing.
Should I leave the lid open?+
Yes, between loads.
What is the tCL message?+
LG's reminder to run the Tub Clean cycle.
