Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 family screen is black, blank or flickering

A black screen on an IdeaPad Slim 5 comes in two types, and the first test separates them. If the fans spin and the keyboard lights up but the screen stays dark, it is a display or graphics problem: connect an external monitor, and if it shows a picture the board is alive. Try pressing Windows key plus Ctrl plus Shift plus B, which restarts the graphics driver, and Windows key plus P to check the display mode. A power setting that sleeps the display too soon is another cause. A black screen with a faint image under a flashlight is a backlight fault. If the black screen began after you closed the lid, check the lid-close action in Power options, and if the laptop is connected to a monitor, the lid may have switched the display off on purpose. A brightness set to zero looks like a black screen too, so press the brightness-up key before you assume a fault.
