Google Nest Protect alarm code pulsing-blue-setup-or-test
Setup or test. Google says a pulsing blue ring means Protect is ready for setup ("Hi"), or is running a test after you press the center button ("Press to test"): it checks its sensors, batteries, Wi-Fi connection and interconnection with other Protects.
Press the center button once if you want to test it.
Google says a 2nd generation Protect also runs a Sound Check on its horn and speaker, one horn cycle for smoke and two for carbon monoxide, and tells you when the test is complete and what the results were.
Reading Nest Protect lights and sounds
A Nest Protect talks in three ways at once: the color of its light ring, the spoken message from the speaker and the sound of the horn or chirp. Green means the alarm passed its start-up or its monthly check. Yellow is a Heads-Up that smoke or carbon monoxide is rising, and red is an emergency. The voice names the room, which matters in a house with several alarms.
A red ring or a siren is never a code to troubleshoot first. Move everyone out, call the fire department or 911 from outside, and press the center button only when you are safe. The pages below cover the quieter faults: a chirp with no light, a ring that stays dark, and the messages that mean the alarm itself needs replacing.
Many chirps are plain housekeeping. A single chirp with a spoken battery warning means the batteries are low, and a chirp every minute with no light ring means the unit has failed and must be replaced. Press the Nest button once to hear the spoken message before you decide which case you have.
Because the alarm is a safety device, Google gives replacement rather than repair for a failed sensor or light ring. Keep a working battery alarm in the room while a Protect is out of action, and note the manufacture date on the back, since the sensors have a limited life.
What does a yellow ring on a Nest Protect mean?
A Heads-Up: smoke or carbon monoxide is rising but has not reached emergency level. The voice names the room.
Why does my Nest Protect chirp every minute?
With no light ring, Google's table lists a light ring failure and failed sensors. Press the button for the spoken message and replace the unit.
How do I silence a Protect?
Press the center button once you know the cause is safe; for an emergency, only after everyone is safe and the fire department has been called.
