Kidde — What Causes Consistent Chirping?

Kidde smoke alarms: reading the chirps and the lights

A smoke alarm talks in chirps and flashes, and Kidde uses different patterns for different problems. A chirp about once a minute is most often a low battery, a chirp every 30 seconds on a sealed-battery model means that the alarm has reached the end of its life, and a chirp between flashes of the red light means that the alarm itself has detected a malfunction. Finding which pattern you have is the first step, and it usually tells you whether you need a battery or a new alarm.

The guides on this page cover the patterns that Kidde publishes, with what each means and the first thing to do. The most useful habit is to test the alarm by pressing and holding the Test button for a few seconds each month, and to read the manufacture date on the back of the alarm, since Kidde recommends replacing every smoke alarm, battery and hardwired, after ten years.

A chirp is a warning, not a fault to ignore, because an alarm that cannot be trusted does not protect the home. If you are unsure, replace the alarm and fit a new one while you work out what was wrong with the old one. Hardwired alarms also connect to the house wiring, and any work on that wiring belongs to a licensed electrician.

Kidde makes both battery-powered and hardwired alarms, and some of them combine smoke and carbon monoxide sensing. The chirp patterns on this page apply to the models that Kidde's own chirping guide covers, and the first step with any chirp is to identify your model from the label on the back. Hardwired alarms add a second power source, so a chirp on one of them can mean the backup battery or an interruption to the house supply, and the guides separate the two. A tiny fraction of chirps are caused by dust or insects in the sensing chamber, which a gentle vacuum with a brush attachment clears.

If a chirp continues after the battery has been replaced and the alarm cleaned, the alarm has reached the end of its useful life and should be replaced, whatever its age.

How often should I replace a smoke alarm?

Every ten years from the date of manufacture, which is printed on the back or the side of the alarm.

Can I stop a chirp by taking the battery out?

Removing the battery silences the chirp but leaves you without protection, so replace the battery or the alarm at once.
