Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener diagnostic code 5-5 (5 UP, 5 DOWN): meaning and exact next steps
diagnostic code 5-5 (5 UP, 5 DOWN) means A remote light is required for unattended operation. This code applies to the LiftMaster and Chamberlain wall-mounted jackshaft openers 8500W / RJO70, 98022 / RJO101 and 98032. As a safety precaution, the opener will not move the door in response to an unattended command without a paired myQ-compatible remote light. myQ cannot operate the door, scheduled closes and smart-home automations do not run, and Timer-to-Close will not close the door, while the wall control and remotes still work.

Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener error codes: Security+ arrow code 1-1 (1 UP flash, 1 DOWN flash)
Safety sensors blocked, misaligned, disconnected, or a wire break. The door starts closing, then reverses, or stays open and will not close. The code appears when a sensor is blocked, misaligned, disconnected or unable to communicate with the opener for more than four seconds.
Clear the door's path of people, pets and objects, then press and hold the wall control button until the door is fully closed. If it closes only while you hold the button, the safety sensor system needs troubleshooting.
The Chamberlain Group's steps: remove anything blocking the invisible beam between the two sensors. Check the two sensor lights: one sensor has an amber light and sends the beam, and the other has a green light and receives it. A green light off or blinking means the sensors are likely out of alignment, so loosen the wing nut on the receiving sensor, gently aim the sensors at each other and tighten it once the green light stays steady. Both lights off means the sensors may not be getting power, so check the sensor wires at the opener are secure.
Both lights steady means the sensors are aligned and communicating. If the lights still misbehave, The Chamberlain Group calls the short-wire test technician recommended: with power disconnected you remove the sensors, cut each sensor wire about 6 inches from the sensor, strip about 7/16 inch (11 mm), connect the sensors directly to the opener's terminals and restore power. If the sensors work near the opener, the wire in the wall may be damaged; if they do not, one or both sensors may need replacing. Depending on the opener, the work lights may flash 10 times, and with no bulbs installed the opener may click.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener error codes: Security+ arrow code 1-2 (1 UP flash, 2 DOWN flashes)
The safety sensor wiring is likely reversed or shorted. The door will not close, and with a wall control or keypad it may move an inch or two and return. The opener lights may flash 10 times.
Inspect along the sensor wire for staples, nails, cuts or other visible damage.
The Chamberlain Group's steps: if the garage was prewired when the opener was installed, confirm the same wire colors connect to the same spots at the sensors and at the opener. If it was not prewired, white wires connect to the white terminal and black-striped wires to the black terminal at the opener. Correct crossed wires and remove anything pinching the wire. If the issue continues, The Chamberlain Group calls the short-wire test technician recommended: with power disconnected you remove the sensors, cut each sensor wire about 6 inches from the sensor, strip about 7/16 inch (11 mm), connect the sensors directly to the opener's terminals and restore power.
If the sensors work near the opener, the wire in the wall may be damaged; if they do not, one or both sensors may need replacing.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener error codes: Security+ arrow code 1-5 (1 UP flash, 5 DOWN flashes)
RPM not detected. The opener did not sense the motor spinning right after a command, which does not automatically mean the motor has failed. The opener hums or clicks, the door moves less than 6 to 8 inches then stops or reverses, or the door does not move at all.
Note which of the three things you see: humming, clicking or a few inches of movement.
The Chamberlain Group says to follow the path that matches: for a door that moves less than 6 to 8 inches, see its article on an opener that travels less than 6 to 8 inches after replacing internal parts; for an opener that hums but the door does not move, see its hum-but-no-movement article; and for a residential jackshaft opener with a pulled emergency release rope, the opener may no longer be mechanically engaged, so reconnect the door and try again. If the issue continues, the motor, travel module or another internal component may need inspection.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener error codes: Security+ arrow code 1-6 (1 UP flash, 6 DOWN flashes)
Unexpected door movement. The opener detected door movement without receiving a command. This is most often caused by an unbalanced door or by manually moving a door connected to a jackshaft opener. If the door is no longer properly supported by the spring system, its weight can move it downward on its own, and the opener may try to return it to fully open.
Note whether the door drifts down after opening, or the code appeared after you moved a jackshaft-opener door by hand.
The Chamberlain Group's steps: if the door drifts down after opening, it may be out of balance, so run the balance test. If the code appeared after moving a door connected to a jackshaft opener by hand, the emergency release rope may still be disconnected, so reconnect the door to the opener and operate it again. A jackshaft opener is mounted on the wall next to the door instead of on the ceiling. If the balance test shows the door is out of balance, contact a local garage door professional.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener error codes: Security+ arrow code 3-5 (3 UP, 5 DOWN)
Cable tension monitor. This code applies to the wall-mounted jackshaft openers 8500W / RJO70, 98022 / RJO101 and 98032. The monitor detected a condition that could affect safe operation of the door: it may be disconnected, incorrectly positioned, damaged, or detecting a loose garage door cable. The door starts closing and returns to the open position, or does not move.
Stop and look at whether the door cable looks loose, frayed or off the drum, without touching it.
The Chamberlain Group's steps: if the cable appears loose, frayed, damaged or off the drum, stop using the door and contact a local garage door professional. Otherwise check whether the cable tension monitor has become disconnected and reconnect it to the terminals on the logic board per the installation manual, check that the monitor's roller rests on top of the door cable, and inspect the monitor wire for visible damage. The Chamberlain Group calls the monitor a safety component: if it, its wiring or the cable looks damaged, contact a professional.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener error codes: Security+ arrow code 4-1 (4 UP flashes, 1 DOWN flash)
Resistance while closing. The opener detected an unforeseen change in RPM while attempting to close the door, which can happen if something blocks the door or the door becomes difficult to move. The door reverses, stops or struggles at some point while closing, anywhere in the closing cycle.
Remove trash cans, tools, broom handles and other objects in or near the door path.
The Chamberlain Group's steps: inspect the door path and tracks, check the rollers and hinges for visible obstructions or wear, and lubricate the rollers and hinges according to the manufacturer's maintenance instructions. If the door attempts to travel farther after reaching the floor, reprogram the travel limits. It warns not to disconnect an open garage door from the opener, because a weak or broken spring or an unbalanced door could make it fall, and to contact a trained door technician if you cannot identify the obstruction.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener error codes: Security+ arrow code 4-2 (4 UP, 2 DOWN)
Resistance while opening. The opener stops the door when it detects more resistance than expected during the opening cycle, so the door stops before it reaches fully open. Something is making the door harder to open than the opener expects.
Close the door with the wall control, then inspect the door path and tracks and remove trash cans, tools, broom handles and other visible obstructions.
The Chamberlain Group's steps: test the door again, and if it still does not fully open, check the balance of the garage door. Never adjust or loosen the door's springs, cables, pulleys or brackets yourself. If the balance test shows the door is out of balance, contact a local garage door professional.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener error codes: Security+ arrow code 4-3 (4 UP, 3 DOWN)
RPM lost while closing. The opener's motor speed dropped unexpectedly while closing the door, so the door starts closing but stops and reverses before reaching the floor. RPM is how fast the motor is spinning, which the opener measures internally to sense whether something is blocking the door.
Look for anything that could interfere with normal door movement.
The Chamberlain Group's steps: check the travel module, the internal component that tracks the door's movement and position, then inspect the door path and tracks, remove visible obstructions, check the rollers and hinges for obstruction or wear, and test again. If the code continues, the travel module, RPM sensing system or another internal component may need inspection by a local garage door professional.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener error codes: Security+ arrow code 4-4 (4 UP, 4 DOWN)
RPM lost while opening. The opener detected an unexpected drop in motor speed while opening, and the door stops before reaching fully open.
Inspect the door path and tracks, remove visible obstructions and check the rollers and hinges for obstruction or wear.
The Chamberlain Group's steps: test the door again, and if the code returns perform a door balance test. During the balance test, disconnect the door from the opener with the emergency release rope and try to open it by hand. If it is difficult or will not open, inspect the torsion springs above the door for visible damage, and if a spring appears broken stop troubleshooting and contact a garage door professional. If the door opens and closes normally, reconnect it and continue. If the door passes and the code still appears, the travel module, RPM sensing system or another internal component may need inspection.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener error codes: Security+ arrow code 4-5 (4 UP, 5 DOWN)
Unrecognized travel module. The opener does not recognize the travel module that is installed, usually right after a part was replaced. The door starts closing and returns to the open position, or does not move and stays open.
Find the opener's model number on the label on the motor unit.
The Chamberlain Group's steps: check the owner's manual for the correct travel module for your opener model, and if the installed one is not the correct part, replace it with the correct part from the manual. If the issue continues, contact a local garage door professional.
