The Xbox Series X Digital Edition has no disc drive, so every game is a download, and its 1 TB solid-state drive fills with a few large titles, since the usable space is a little under 800 GB after the system. Microsoft's storage help explains the options. See what uses the space in Manage, Storage, where the list gives each game's size, and uninstall those you are not playing, since you can download them again and your saves remain in the cloud.
The checks in more detail
Games on the Series X are large because they include 4K assets, and some have optional packs, such as high-resolution textures or language packs, that you can remove from the game's Manage game and add-ons page. Remove old captures and apps, and clear the Blu-ray and other media apps you do not use. There are two ways to add space. The Seagate Storage Expansion Card plugs into the back of the console and runs as fast as the internal drive, so it can hold Xbox Series X|S games and run them directly; it is more expensive than a standard drive.
An external USB 3.0 or later hard drive adds cheaper space, but it can run only Xbox One and backwards-compatible games directly, and Series X|S games on it must be moved to the internal drive or the expansion card to play, though they can be stored there. EaseUS's guide lists common reasons an external drive is not recognized: a USB 2.0 port, a weak cable, or a drive that needs power. Formatting erases the drive. Because the console is digital only, a failed download can leave partial files, so if the storage looks full after deleting, restart and check the Queue.
Keep at least 30 to 50 GB free for updates, since big patches need free space to install. If space still does not return, contact Xbox support. A neat habit is to uninstall a game when you finish it and re-download it when you return, because Series X downloads are fast on a good connection and your saves stay in the cloud. If your internet plan has a data cap, though, large re-downloads cost data, so check before you clear a game of 100 GB. Games also have quick resume states that use space, so closing a game fully frees a little more.
