- The disc-free flagshipThe Series X Digital Edition is the disc-free version of Microsoft's flagship console, with a 1 terabyte solid-state drive and HDMI 2.1 output for high frame rate gaming. Everything on it is a download, so storage and network matter more than on a disc model.
- What owners run intoWith no disc drive, storage fills fast and games must be re-downloaded, and owners also report no sound after an HDMI change and a screen that will not show 120 hertz.
- How to approach a faultUse the Ultra High Speed cable and the TV's HDMI 2.1 port, manage storage and check the HDMI audio setting.
- Finding your console and its settingsThe console's serial number is on the back and in Settings, System, Console info. The same screen lists the OS version, and Settings, General, TV and display options shows what resolutions and refresh rates the TV supports.
- Storage planningOf the 1 terabyte, a little under 800 gigabytes is usable, and games of over 100 gigabytes fill it quickly. A Seagate expansion card runs games at full speed, and an external USB drive stores Series X games but cannot run them directly.
- Network and downloadsDownloads need a stable connection, so a wired link is better than Wi-Fi. If downloads stall, check Settings, Network settings, restart the router and make sure the console is not set to a metered connection.
- Network checks for downloadsSlow downloads are usually Wi-Fi. Use a wired connection, restart the router, and run the console's network test in Settings. If speeds are low, try a different DNS server and check that another device is not using the bandwidth. Keep the console in Sleep mode, not Energy saving, so that it updates games overnight.
- Cooling and placementThe Series X is tall and draws air in at the bottom and out at the top, so give it space on all sides and keep it upright if the manual says so. A console in a closed cabinet runs hot and loud. Dust the vents with compressed air held at a distance, and do not stack things on top of it.
