Apple iPad Pro 11-inch screen or touch input is not working correctly

Apple iPad Pro 11-inch (M4) screen or touch input is not working correctly: one app/region, moisture, protector/case, charger interference and display hardware should be separated. Scoped to 2024 11-inch M4.

An 11 inch iPad Pro M4 whose touch screen ignores taps, responds late or registers touches that are not there is usually a case of the basics, as guides from Beebom and TechPP list: clean and dry the screen, remove a screen protector or case edge that presses on the glass, and force restart. On this iPad that means pressing and releasing volume up, then volume down, then holding the top button until the Apple logo appears.

The checks in more detail

The Pro's tandem OLED has an adaptive refresh and an Apple Pencil Pro hover feature that can affect touch near the screen, so a Pencil resting on the glass, or a Magic Keyboard folio that closes against the screen, can leave marks and ghost touches. Wet hands, a damp cloth and a charger with poor grounding all cause erratic touches, and the last is solved by another charger. Update iPadOS, since users report that updates restore touch.

Toggle Touch Accommodations in Accessibility, Touch, which can ignore repeated touches. Test in a different app, since one app may freeze. A screen that is dead only in a strip, or shows lines or flicker, needs Apple service. If the Pro's screen seems to lose touches only when the Pencil Pro is in use, check Settings, Apple Pencil for the Only Draw with Apple Pencil option, which ignores finger touches in drawing apps and can be mistaken for a touch fault.

Toggle it and test with a finger in a different app to see the difference. Brightness can mask a touch problem: at low brightness the OLED shows less detail around the edges, and a zone that misreads touches may only be noticed in dark mode. Test in a bright app with a keyboard open and press each key to see whether any keys fail, which maps a dead zone quickly.

Why an OLED iPad Pro is different
The 11 inch iPad Pro with the M4 chip has a tandem OLED display, which is thin and very responsive, and its touch layer is sensitive to moisture on the glass. A single drop of water or a smear of cream can trigger touches in odd places. Wiping the screen with a dry microfibre cloth, then letting it rest a moment, solves most of these cases.
Pencil and palm
If the Apple Pencil is in use, the iPad ignores a resting palm, and a pencil that is low on charge can behave erratically. Check the Pencil's battery in the Batteries widget, and turn it off to see whether touch settles. A keyboard folio's trackpad can also cause apparent touch events if the iPad is in a Smart Folio with the edge pressing on the display.
