• The last home button
  The iPhone 8 is the end of an era: the last iPhone with a physical home button and Touch ID, a glass back that charges wirelessly and a 4.7 inch LCD that older eyes still like. Apple stopped updating it after iOS 16, and its small battery is the usual reason people bring it for help.
• What owners run into
  Its 1,821 milliamp-hour battery is tiny and by now exhausted in most phones, so short life is the main complaint, with a risk of swelling that pushes the screen away from the frame. A home button that clicks but will not read a fingerprint, and Wi-Fi that struggles with new routers, are the other reports.
• How to approach a fault
  If the screen bulges, stop using and charging the phone and take it for repair. Otherwise reset network settings for Wi-Fi faults and replace the battery for endurance problems.
• Finding your exact model
  Settings, General, About shows the model; the iPhone 8 is A1863, A1905 or A1906, and the iPhone 8 Plus is a different size, so check before ordering a case or battery.
• The home button and Touch ID
  The home button is paired with the phone's logic board, so replacing it with a part from another iPhone leaves Touch ID disabled even though the click works. Apple's own repair can restore it, and independent shops need the original button transferred.
• Keeping an old phone useful
  With iOS 16 as its last version, the iPhone 8 still runs messaging, maps and calls but struggles with heavy apps. Free storage, a new battery and a reset can make it feel quick again, and it makes a fine spare, music player or child's first phone.
• Home button repairs
  If the home button fails, Apple or an authorized shop can replace it and keep Touch ID working. A cheap replacement from a street shop usually disables Touch ID. Use a passcode in the meantime, and consider whether the phone is worth the repair at its age.
