• What owners run into
  As a small phone from 2018, its battery is long past its prime. Owners report slow charging, short life and sudden shutdowns, and a phone that fails to wake after a drop. Water resistance fades with age and repairs, so a phone that was fine in a pocket years ago may no longer survive rain.
• How to approach a fault
  Check Battery Health in Settings, try a different Lightning cable, and clean the port gently with a wooden toothpick while the phone is off. If it will not start at all, charge it for half an hour before judging.

  Settings, General, About shows the model; the iPhone XS has numbers beginning A1920, A2097, A2098 or A2100. Replacement parts for the XS differ from those for the XS Max and the X, so check the number.
• What a fault usually means at this age
  A phone from 2018 usually has a worn battery, a port full of lint or a cracked back glass. Software faults are rarer once the phone is on its final iOS, because there are no new updates to introduce them, so a sudden problem is nearly always hardware.
