A screen protector must be one made to work with an ultrasonic reader; an air gap or a thick film stops it, and some older protectors are known to make the reader unreliable, so remove it to test. If the screen was replaced by a third party, the reader may no longer match. Go to Settings, Biometrics and security, Fingerprints and delete your prints, then add them again, registering the same finger twice and different edges of the finger, in good conditions, with the protector fitted if you use one, because Samsung advises registering with the protector in place.

Turn on the touch sensitivity option if it is offered. For face recognition, clean the front camera, face the phone straight in good light and register again, adding the glasses you wear. Restart the phone and install updates, since Samsung improves the readers by patch. If both fail after a drop or a repair, a hardware fault is likely. Always keep a strong PIN, since the phone asks for it after a restart and after several failed attempts. If you notice the reader fails only when your hands are wet or cold, that is normal for most readers, and drying them helps.

Back up before service, and tell the repairer if the screen was replaced before. Note that Samsung's Secure Folder and some banking apps ask for the fingerprint again even if the screen unlocked with a face, because they require the stronger method. If an app keeps asking, register the fingerprint in the app's own security settings, and check that the biometric option is allowed for that app in Settings, Biometrics and security, Biometric settings. After a software update, biometrics sometimes need to be switched on again for apps, which takes a minute.
