When an ADT heat detector goes offline, the panel has stopped hearing its supervision signal and reports a trouble or missing zone, and because the detector guards a fire risk, the fault should be fixed the same day. IGotC's guide to beeping ADT sensors lists the usual causes: a low battery, a signal that does not reach the panel and a sensor that was moved or knocked. Heat detectors sit in garages, attics, kitchens and boiler rooms, and these places are hard on radios and batteries:
The checks in more detail
attics are hot, garages are cold, and the metal in a garage door, a car or a boiler weakens the signal. Start with the battery, using the type the manual lists and checking its date; extreme temperatures shorten life. Then check the case is closed so that the tamper switch is shut, and the detector is mounted as the manual says, on the ceiling or high on a wall, away from a vent, a draft or a heat source that would cause false alarms.
Test the range by holding the detector near the panel: if it reports there and not in its place, the signal is the problem, and a repeater or a move to a nearby position helps. Metal, a refrigerator, a water heater or a garage door can all block it. If several sensors drop at the same time, the fault is at the panel or from new interference, and the installer should look.
After the fix, test the detector in test mode using the manufacturer's method and tell the monitoring company beforehand. Do not bypass a fire zone to silence a trouble message without advice, since that leaves the area unprotected. If a new battery and a close position do not bring it back, delete and enrol it again, then replace it. Record the date of the fault and what you changed, and check the detector yearly.

Likely causes of “ADT Heat Detector is offline or unavailable”, and how to tell them apart
- 1
A weak battery
What separates it The panel reports trouble
How to confirm Replace it
- 2
Heat or cold at the location
What separates it Short battery life
How to confirm Use the rated battery and check position
- 3
Metal or distance
What separates it The signal does not reach the panel
How to confirm Add a repeater or move the detector
- 4
An open case
What separates it The tamper switch is open
How to confirm Close it firmly
- 5
Interference
What separates it Several sensors drop out
How to confirm Ask the installer to check the panel
Before you touch a setting
Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence
- The location of the detector
- The battery type and age
- Whether it reports near the panel
- Whether other sensors drop out

Model-specific
What is true of this model and not of its siblings
- Fire risk
- Fix a trouble message the same day.
- Harsh places
- Heat and metal weaken the system.
Stop boundary
When this stops being a self-service repair
- !If several sensors drop, ask the installer to check the panel
- !If it will not return on a fresh battery, replace it
- !Do not bypass a fire zone without advice
