At what temperature does it alarm?+
SimpliSafe states below 41°F for the low threshold, chosen to catch a freeze before pipes burst rather than after. An upper limit can be set separately, which is what people use for pets, artwork and plants.
The reading looks out of date.+
SimpliSafe provides hourly readings, so a value up to an hour old is the specified behaviour rather than a stale display. Judging this sensor by a live-refresh expectation produces a fault report where there is no fault.
Where should I put it?+
SimpliSafe recommends near a thermostat, or near exposed plumbing vulnerable to freezing. Those are different jobs: near the thermostat tells you about the house, near the pipe run tells you about the thing that actually bursts. Pick according to which you are protecting.
Why does it read differently from my thermostat?+
Because it is measuring a different place. A sensor near an exposed pipe run in an unheated void will legitimately read far below a thermostat in a heated hallway, and both are correct. That difference is the point of putting it there.
