VIZIO TV line picture is too dark or keeps dimming

VIZIO TV line (Quantum Pro, Quantum, M-Series, V-Series and OLED) picture is too dark or keeps dimming: ambient/power saving, HDR mode, content mastering and panel behavior should be separated. Scoped to VQP65/75C-84.

VIZIO's display article treats a dark, dim or partly visible picture as a settings-and-source question first. Power cycle the TV, hold the physical Power button five seconds and plug it back in, or use Menu, System, Reset & Admin, Soft Power Cycle where the model has it. Open the TV's menu or home screen: if that is dark too, the fault is the TV; if the menu looks normal, the device, cable, app or source is the cause.

The checks in more detail

Open Picture and try a different Picture Mode such as Standard, Calibrated or Movie, then Reset Picture Mode or restore defaults. Picture guides for VIZIO models point at Backlight, Brightness and the ambient light sensor: lowering Backlight to suit the room and turning the ambient light sensor on lets the TV adjust, while a Backlight Control or Eco Mode setting can dim the picture and should be turned off if the picture pulses dark and light;

when the sensor is on, manual backlight is grayed out until the sensor is disabled. For HDR content, an HDR signal on an input not set up for it looks dim. Check the source's HDR and resolution settings, test another input and app, and inspect the screen for physical damage without pressing it. If the screen stays dark on every input and in the menu, VIZIO says to request service; a black screen with sound and no menu is the backlight case.

A dark picture that gets brighter as the room gets brighter is the ambient sensor doing its job, and the fix is a setting rather than a repair. Judge the picture after your eyes have adjusted, and change one setting at a time so you can undo it. Record the Backlight and Brightness values before changing them, so you can return to a known setting if a change makes things worse.
