LG dishwasher will not drain or leaves water in the tub

LG dishwasher will not drain or leaves water in the tub: separate normal sump water from a blocked filter, pump cover, hose, air gap, disposal connection or household drain. Scoped to LDP6810*.

On the LG LDP6810, standing water is an OE (drainage) message until proven otherwise, and LG's own list gives four causes: a clogged, kinked or frozen drain hose, a clogged air gap or garbage disposal, and clogged filters. Clean the filters first, since LG says to clean them after each load for best performance, then check the air gap and disposal, and look at the hose. If a new installation drains poorly, the disposal knockout plug may not have been removed, and LG says the dishwasher cannot drain without that.

Differential

Likely causes of “LG dishwasher will not drain or leaves water in the tub”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

Clogged filters at the bottom of the tub

What separates it OE shows, standing water and food debris sit around the filter area

How to confirm Remove the lower rack, turn the inner filter counter-clockwise and inspect the filter and sump opening

  2. 2

A clogged air gap or garbage disposal

What separates it The sink air gap gurgles, or the disposal is full and water backs up into the tub

How to confirm Clean the air gap under its cover with a toothpick or brush and run the disposal empty

A kinked, crushed or frozen drain hose

What separates it OE shows and the hose behind the dishwasher has a sharp bend or is cold and stiff

How to confirm Pull the dishwasher forward if you can reach the hose and follow it for kinks; check for frost in a cold space

  4. 4

What separates it A new or recently reinstalled dishwasher never drains properly

How to confirm Ask the installer or check the disposal inlet; LG says the dishwasher cannot drain until the plug is removed

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Whether OE or another code is on the display when the water will not leave
  • Whether the drain hose goes to a disposal, an air gap or a waste tee
  • How long since the filters were last cleaned and what was in them

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Turn the dishwasher off and remove the lower rack

    Reversible

Press Power to turn it off, pull out the lower rack and turn the bottom spray arm so the wider vee opens toward the front, as LG describes for reaching the filters.

  2. Clean the filters

    Reversible

Turn the inner filter counter-clockwise, lift out the assembled inner and stainless steel filters, and clean them with a soft brush under warm running water. Check the sump opening under them for bits of glass or bone, and reassemble until the filter clicks.

  3. Clean the air gap and disposal

    Reversible

Turn the dishwasher off, remove the air gap cover and the plastic cap underneath, and clear debris with a toothpick or brush. Run the garbage disposal empty so it is not the bottleneck.

  4. Check the drain hose

    Reversible

Look for a kinked or crushed hose behind the dishwasher. LG says a clogged, kinked or frozen drain hose causes OE, and a drain hose extension should use a 5/8 or 7/8 in inside diameter hose about 2 to 3 ft long.

  5. Run a drain and read the display

    Reversible

Press and hold Start for three seconds to run a drain-only, and the power turns off when it finishes. If OE comes back after all of the above, call LG rather than repeating cycles.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Where the filters are
Under the lower rack: an inner filter that turns counter-clockwise, and a stainless steel filter that lifts out with it. LG says to check the sump opening under them and never run a cycle with the filters assembled wrongly.

  • !If an AE (water leakage) message appears, turn off the water supply and call LG

Exact questions

Common questions

What does OE mean on an LG LDP6810?+

A drainage problem: a clogged, kinked or frozen drain hose, a clogged air gap or garbage disposal, or clogged filters. LG says to clean the air gap or disposal and the filters.

How do I run a drain-only cycle?+

Press and hold Start for three seconds until the cycle stops. When the dishwasher finishes draining, the power turns off.

How often should the filters be cleaned?+

LG says for best wash performance clean the filter after each load, and at least once a month with a soft brush in hard-water areas. Its schedule table gives intervals by loads per week.

Is the air gap part of the dishwasher?+

No. LG says the drain air gap and disposal are external plumbing devices, and the warranty does not cover cleaning them.

Why does a new dishwasher not drain?+

LG says that if the knockout plug in the disposal has not been removed, the dishwasher cannot drain properly.

What hose can I use to extend the drain?+

LG says to use a 5/8 or 7/8 in inside diameter hose, 2 to 3 ft long, with a coupler to join the two hose ends.

Can I use the Cancel button to drain?+

Yes. The manual says the Cancel button activates the drain pump and cancels the cycle, and the power turns off once draining finishes.

Does frozen water cause drainage errors?+

LG lists a frozen water drain hose among the causes of OE, so check for frost if the dishwasher sits in a cold space.
