LG electric or gas dryer takes too long to dry clothes

LG electric or gas dryer takes too long to dry clothes: a restricted exhaust is the first safety and performance check when drying time increases. Scoped to DLEX6500*.

LG's own table for the DLEX6500 puts airflow first: a lint filter clogged with lint or softener film cuts airflow enough to add a lot of drying time, and so does a blocked, kinked or overlong duct. Clean the filter before every load, then check that the outside vent damper opens freely. After that the manual lists a badly sorted load, heavy fabrics, an overloaded or underloaded drum, and Energy Saver, which adds an air-dry stretch to the Normal cycle. The Flow Sense light means the dryer itself has detected a vent restriction.

Differential

Likely causes of “LG electric or gas dryer takes too long to dry clothes”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

A lint filter clogged with lint or fabric softener film

What separates it Loads take much longer than they used to, and the filter looks clean but is coated

How to confirm Hold the cleaned filter to a light to see whether the screen is still blocked

  2. 2

A blocked, crushed or overlong exhaust duct

What separates it The Flow Sense light comes on and the outside flap barely opens

How to confirm Run the dryer and check airflow and the damper at the outside hood

  3. 3

Heavy items mixed with light ones

What separates it Towels and jeans stay damp while light items are dry

How to confirm Sort heavy from light and run them as separate loads

  4. 4

Energy Saver adding an air-dry stretch

What separates it The cycle starts cool and the total time is longer

How to confirm Turn the option off and compare the finish time

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • The cycle name, the dry level and temperature you chose, and whether Energy Saver was on
  • Whether the Flow Sense light or a duct blockage message of 80, 90 or 95 percent showed
  • The length and material of the duct behind the dryer

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Clean the lint filter before every load

    Reversible

Lift the filter straight up and roll the lint off or vacuum it. LG says to do this after every cycle, and to wash a filter that is clogged with softener in warm soapy water and let it dry fully.

  2. Check the outside vent hood

    Reversible

Run the dryer and stand at the hood. LG wants strong airflow and a damper that opens freely and is not blocked, jammed or damaged.

  3. Check the duct run

    Reversible

LG calls for 4 in (10.2 cm) metal duct, no more than 8 ft (2.4 m) of flexible metal duct in total, and no crushed or kinked sections. Pull the dryer forward carefully and look behind it.

  4. Sort the load

    Reversible

Separate heavy fabrics from light ones and divide extra large loads. LG says light items in a heavy load can fool the sensor because they dry first.

  5. Turn Energy Saver off and test

    Reversible

Deselect Energy Saver for the Normal cycle and time a normal load. If it is still slow, run LG's exhaust test with an empty drum.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Vent numbers from the manual
4 in (10.2 cm) rigid, semi-rigid or flexible metal duct, flexible metal duct at most 8 ft (2.4 m), and static pressure at most 0.6 in (1.5 cm) measured about 2 ft (60.9 cm) from the dryer with it running empty.

Stop boundary

When this stops being a self-service repair

  • !If the filter is clean, the duct is clear and the load sorted but drying still takes about twice as long, call LG service
  • !If the Flow Sense light stays on for more than five cycles after cleaning the duct, call LG service
  • !If the outside damper is jammed or damaged, have a qualified person repair it before using the dryer again

Exact questions

Common questions

Why does my LG DLEX6500 take so long?+

LG says proper airflow is critical: a filter full of lint or coated with softener residue can reduce airflow enough to greatly increase drying time.

Can the dryer run with a partly blocked duct?+

LG says it can run, but drying times and energy use go up, and the duct should be checked and cleaned immediately.

What is the duct blockage message?+

The dryer shows a blockage percentage of 80, 90 or 95 percent when the exhaust is too long, has too many turns or is restricted. Do not use it until the exhaust is cleaned or repaired.

What is Quick Dry?+

A cycle for a small load; the manual gives a default of 30 minutes, adjustable from 10 to 100 minutes.

Can an unbalanced washer load slow drying?+

LG says even an unbalanced load in the washer can cause poor spinning, which leaves clothes wetter and longer to dry.

Why does a small load end early?+

On a sensor cycle the control cannot sense a very small load well and may shut off too soon; use a manual cycle or add damp items.

What is Overnight Dry?+

An energy-efficient cycle that dries a small load overnight at a Med. Low temperature.
