Samsung dryer heats or runs but the drum does not tumble

Samsung dryer heats or runs but the drum does not tumble: a nonturning drum with motor sound commonly crosses the belt, idler, roller or drive-motor boundary. Scoped to DVE45T6000*.

When the Samsung DVE45T6000 runs but the drum does not turn, Samsung's manual gives owners three checks and no repair: the door must be latched and dC must not be showing, the load must be the right size and not tangled, and the dryer must not be in the cool-down phase or paused. A very large, tangled load can lock the drum or push the door open, and the manual says items should be untangled before they go in. If the drum still does not turn on an empty dryer with the door latched, the drive parts are for a service center.

Differential

Likely causes of “Samsung dryer heats or runs but the drum does not tumble”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

The door is not latched, so the dryer will not run

What separates it dC appears on the display or the drum never begins to move

How to confirm Close the door firmly and make sure no laundry is caught in it

  2. 2

An overloaded or tangled load jammed against the drum

What separates it The motor hums and the drum barely turns because an overloaded or tangled load is jammed against the drum

How to confirm Remove half the load and untangle sheets and towels before restarting

  3. 3

The cycle is paused or the dryer is in cool-down

What separates it The drum stops and starts and the display shows a cycle in progress

How to confirm Press Start/Pause (hold to start) again if the door was opened during the cycle

  4. 4

A drive part such as the belt or roller has failed

What separates it The motor runs with an empty drum, but the drum does not rotate at all

How to confirm Stop using the dryer and contact a Samsung service center

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Whether dC or another information code shows on the display
  • Whether the motor hums or is silent when the drum should turn
  • How full the drum was and whether the load was tangled

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Latch the door

    Reversible

Close the door until it clicks and make sure nothing is caught in the seal. dC on the display means the dryer was operated with the door open, and Samsung's fix is to close the door properly and clear any laundry caught in it.

  2. Reduce and untangle the load

    Reversible

Pull out heavy items and untangle sheets. Samsung says extremely tangled items can degrade drying or cause the door to open, and that the drum should be filled to no more than about three quarters for a large load.

  3. Restart with a hold

    Reversible

Press and hold Start/Pause (Hold to Start). If the door was opened during a cycle the manual says to press or tap Start/Pause again to resume.

  4. Look for small objects

    Reversible

Check the drum and the door area for coins, loose buttons, nails or a stray sock jammed between the drum and the front. Samsung tells you to remove such objects promptly.

  5. Run an empty test

    Reversible

With the drum empty and the door latched, start Air Fluff for a minute or two. If the motor sounds but the drum stays still, note that and stop; a drive part needs a technician.

Load sizes in the manual
Samsung defines a large load as filling the drum to about 3/4, a medium load about 1/2, and a small load as 3 to 5 items filling not more than 1/4. ACTIVEWEAR is limited to a maximum of 4 lb. Items need room to tumble freely, and one washer load should equal one dryer load.

Exact questions

Common questions

What does dC mean?+

The dryer detected that the door is open. Close it properly and make sure laundry is not caught in it.

Can a big load stop the drum?+

Yes. Samsung says items should be untangled before drying and that a large load should fill only about three quarters of the drum.

What does dF mean?+

An incorrect door switch. The manual says to contact a Samsung service center.

Is the drum meant to stop and reverse?+

The manual describes intermittent tumbling for Wrinkle Prevent, so a drum that turns only now and then near the end of a cycle is normal.

How full can I fill the drum?+

For a large load, about three quarters full. A medium load is about half and a small load is three to five items, not more than a quarter.

Why does the drum light not come on?+

Hold Eco Dry for 3 seconds. The lamp stays on for 2 minutes and then switches off by itself.

Should I reach in to free the drum?+

Never while it is moving. Stop the cycle, wait for the drum to stop, and unplug the dryer before you look further.

Is a drum that will not turn a home repair?+

No. Samsung's manual gives owner checks only for the door and load, and refers everything else to a service center.
