Samsung dryers: heat, vent, codes and SmartThings

A dryer that takes too long usually has a clogged lint filter or vent, so clean the filter every load and clear the vent hose and the outside hood. A dryer that does not heat on an electric model may have lost one leg of the 240 volt supply, so check both breakers. A vent code means airflow is restricted. A dryer that stops mid-cycle may have an overheating thermal protection tripping because of the vent.

The label with the model and serial is inside the door opening. SmartThings pairs on 2.4 GHz. Never run a dryer with a damaged vent hose, and use a metal hose rather than plastic foil.

Samsung dryers are often installed as a stacked pair with a Samsung washer, and the vent of the dryer is the longest run in the laundry room. Measure the vent from the back of the dryer to the outside hood, counting each elbow as extra length, and compare it with the maximum in the manual. A run that is too long, or one with many bends, causes slow drying and overheating codes even when the hose is clean. Using rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, and keeping the hood flap free of lint, is the cheapest improvement a dryer can have.

Gas and electric Samsung dryers share the same controls but need different supplies, so check which you have. An electric dryer plugs into a 240 volt outlet with a three or four prong plug, and a gas dryer connects to a gas line and plugs into a normal outlet. If a gas dryer runs but does not heat, check that the gas valve behind the dryer is open and that the igniter glows. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility.

If your dryer shows a sensor code, wipe the moisture sensor bars inside the drum with a cloth and a little vinegar solution, since a film of fabric softener makes the sensors misread. Then run a test cycle with a damp towel and see whether the dryer stops when the towel is dry.
