GE range or oven oven will not heat or preheat

GE range or oven oven will not heat or preheat: mode, temperature, door state, power/gas supply and element/burner operation should be separated. Scoped to JB735S*.

If the oven on a GE JB735 does not heat, GE's troubleshooting chart gives four checks in order: a blown house fuse or tripped breaker (replace or reset), controls set improperly (check the Using the Oven section), the oven being in Sabbath Mode (clear it in Special Features) and, for a dead display, a range plug not fully inserted. Also check the range is not waiting on Delay Time, that a cook mode and temperature were both entered and Start was pressed (the control signals when a bake temperature was forgotten), and that a Self Clean lockout is not active. The bake element is hidden under the oven floor; the broil element is at the top.

Differential

Likely causes of “GE range or oven oven will not heat or preheat”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

A tripped breaker or blown house fuse

What separates it The oven and cooktop are both dead, or the display is blank

How to confirm Reset the breaker or replace the fuse; GE says the same for a dead display, clock or surface units

  2. 2

The oven is in Sabbath Mode

What separates it The display shows a bracket instead of a temperature and normal modes do nothing

How to confirm Press Cancel/Off, hold Bake and Broil together for the special features menu, scroll to Sabb and turn it Off

  3. 3

A mode or temperature was not fully entered

What separates it The control beeps and the display asks for a temperature or time

How to confirm Touch the Bake pad, enter the temperature and press Start; for Self Clean choose a clean time and press Start

  4. 4

Delay Time or Cook Time is set

What separates it The oven starts later than expected or shuts off

How to confirm Cancel/Off, then start again without a Delay Time; the Delay pad starts the oven at a set time of day

  5. 5

The bake element is under the oven floor and cannot be seen

What separates it The oven looks cold even while it is heating

How to confirm Bake heat comes from an element beneath the oven floor; it does not glow like the broil element does

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • What the display shows: a temperature, a bracket, F and a number or nothing
  • Whether the cooktop elements heat up
  • Whether the plug is fully seated and the breaker is on

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Check the power

    Reversible

Confirm the house breaker for the range is on and that no fuse is blown. GE lists this first for a dead oven, clock or display.

  2. Confirm Sabbath Mode is off

    Reversible

If the oven does not respond, verify it is not in Sabbath Mode using the Special Features section.

  3. Start the mode correctly

    Reversible

Press Bake, enter a temperature and press Start. If the control signals after you enter a time, a bake temperature or a clean time was forgotten.

  4. Remove a Delay

    Reversible

If Delay Time was set, cancel it; Delay Time works only with Bake, Convection Bake, Convection Roast and Self-Clean.

  5. Try the F-code reset if a code shows

    Reversible

Press Cancel/Off and let the oven cool for one hour, then use it again. If the code repeats, disconnect all power to the oven and reconnect it; call for service if the code returns.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Time limits
The 12-Hour Auto Shut Off feature (12H Shut) turns the oven off after 12 hours of continuous operation; it can be turned on or off in the special features menu. An oven that stops after a long cook may have reached that limit.

Stop boundary

When this stops being a self-service repair

  • !If the display shows F and a number, follow the F-code steps, and call for service if it repeats

Exact questions

Common questions

Why will my oven not heat?+

GE lists a blown fuse or tripped breaker, controls not set correctly and Sabbath Mode.

Can I see the bake element?+

No. It is under the oven floor and does not glow.

Does Delay Time stop it heating?+

Yes, until the set start time, and it works only with Bake, Convection Bake, Convection Roast and Self-Clean.

What does F and a number mean?+

A function error code: press Cancel/Off, let the oven cool one hour, then try again.

Does the cooktop work when the oven does not?+

Check both; if both are dead, suspect the breaker.

Is Warm a heating mode?+

Warm is a traditional oven mode listed with Bake and Broil Hi/Lo.

Does Lock Controls stop heating?+

It locks the pads; Cancel/Off stays active even when locked.

What is the range phone line?+

GE's manual gives 1.800.220.6899 for connected oven questions.
