Dyson vacuums: suction, battery, filters and blockages

Dyson's cordless vacuums, such as the V10 and the V12 Detect Slim, and its uprights, such as the Ball Animal, have washable filters and tangle-prone brush bars. Owners report loss of suction, a pulsing light, a short run time, a machine that will not charge and noise. The model pages give the checks.

Loss of suction is almost always a full bin, a blocked wand or head or a damp or dirty filter, so check them in that order. A pulsing light points to a blockage or overheating. A short run time may be a worn battery or heavy use of the top mode. A machine that will not charge needs the charger and the contacts checked.

The serial number is on the rating plate. Dyson's support asks for it and the purchase date. Wash filters in cold water and let them dry for twenty-four hours.

Dyson machines are sold with a limited warranty and supplied with service guidance through Dyson's own support. Before you call, run through the usual routine: empty the bin, wash the filter, check the airway from the head to the cyclone and look at the brush bar. Record any light pattern or screen message, since the machines report blockages and filter problems through them. A battery that no longer lasts is a wear item that Dyson sells as a replacement, and many models allow you to swap it yourself.

Why has my Dyson lost suction?

A full bin, a blocked airway or a dirty filter.

How long should a filter dry?

About twenty-four hours.

Can I replace a Dyson battery myself?

On many models yes; check your model's instructions.
