What is true of this model and changes how you fix it
- Hardware — GE Appliances product page4.5 cu ft, dual-action agitator, manual water-level control, top-load, Soak/Rinse and Quick Wash cycles — no smart/app features on this tier.
- Type — TOP-LOADTOP-LOAD washer, mainstream tier; identify agitator versus impeller for loading.
- FeaturesDeep Fill / Deep Rinse options for bulky loads; a glass lid locks before spin, so a 'won't spin' is usually balance or the lid lock.
- BehaviorSome water draining during the initial sensing/fill is normal as it weighs the load; continuous drain-during-fill points to the drain hose set too low in the standpipe.
- Where the GTW585 sitsThe GTW585 is a 4.5 cubic foot GE top-load washer with a dual-action agitator and manual water-level control. It has Soak, Rinse and Quick Wash cycles and no smart or app features.
- Lid lock and lid switchA glass lid locks before the spin, so a washer that will not spin is usually a balance matter or a lid problem. The lock keeps the lid shut while the basket turns.
- Deep Fill and Deep Rinse optionsDeep Fill and Deep Rinse options give a fuller tub for bulky loads.
- Draining while it fillsA little draining during the initial sensing and fill is normal as the washer weighs the load. A washer that drains continuously and never builds water usually has its drain hose set too low in the standpipe.
- Keeping the lid and latch trouble-freeClose the lid gently, keep the latch area clean and do not overload the basket.
- Finding GTW585 on the labelThe label is under the lid or on the back; GE lists the full model as GTW585BSVWS.
- A simple washerThe GTW585 has manual water-level control and no smart features, so a fault is usually one of a handful of mechanical things: the lid switch, the drain hose height, the load balance or the water supply.
- Dual-action agitatorThe dual-action agitator moves clothes both up and down and around. Long items wrap around it, so avoid wrapping sheets, and load loosely to avoid tangling.

Exact questions
Questions that only have an answer for the GE GTW585 top-load washer
My GE GTW585 keeps draining while it fills.+
A little draining during the load-sensing phase is normal. But if it drains continuously and never builds water, the drain hose is likely pushed too far down the standpipe, below the water level, which siphons the water straight out. Raise the hose so its end sits above the water level and is secured (not shoved deep into the drain). That fixes the classic fill-and-drain-together problem.
Why will the lid on my GE GTW585 not lock?+
Residue at the latch, a lid not fully closed or a failed lock.
Why does it drain while filling?+
A little is normal; a constant drain means the hose is set too low.
Does it have a smart app?+
No.
Where is the model number?+
Under the lid or on the back.
Does the GTW585 have a Wi-Fi app?+
No, it has no smart or app features.
