LG front-load or top-load washer cycle takes too long or keeps adding time

LG front-load or top-load washer cycle takes too long or keeps adding time: load sensing, suds removal, heating, balancing and slow fill/drain can legitimately extend displayed time. Scoped to WM4500HBA.

A long cycle on the LG WM4500HBA is usually the washer adapting: LG's manual says it automatically adjusts the wash time for the amount of laundry, water pressure and other operating conditions, that the time remaining on the display is only an estimate, and that this is normal. It may also stop for a few minutes when the motor protection device activates, or stop and refill to redistribute an unbalanced load. Slow filling and draining add time too.

Differential

Likely causes of “LG front-load or top-load washer cycle takes too long or keeps adding time”, and how to tell them apart

  1. 1

Automatic time adjustment for the load and water pressure

What separates it The estimate on the display changes during the cycle

How to confirm Watch the phase; LG says the washer adjusts cycle time and the display is only an estimate

  2. 2

A load the washer had to rebalance

What separates it The washer stops, refills and spins again several times

How to confirm Check for the UE message and rebalance the load

  3. 3

Slow filling from low pressure or clogged inlet filters

What separates it The fill phase drags on and the IE message may show

How to confirm Clean the inlet filters and check the faucets and pressure (20 to 120 psi)

  4. 4

    Slow draining

What separates it Water stays in the drum after the wash phase has ended

How to confirm Check the drain hose and the pump filter

Before you touch a setting

Record this first — changing settings destroys the evidence

  • Which cycle and options were used and what time the display first showed
  • Which phase seemed long: filling, washing, draining or spinning
  • Whether a UE, IE or OE message appeared

  1. Identify the phase

    Reversible

Watch the drum: standing water means a slow fill or drain, thumping means a rebalance and silence means a pause. LG says the washer adjusts its own timing.

  2. Check the fill

    Reversible

If filling is slow, open both faucets fully and clean the inlet filters. IE means an inlet problem.

  3. Check the drain

    Reversible

If water lingers, clear the pump filter and the drain hose; OE means an outlet problem.

  4. Rebalance the load

    Reversible

If the washer keeps stopping and refilling, redistribute the load. UE means the load is out of balance.

  5. Wait out a motor pause

    Reversible

If the washer stops for a few minutes and then restarts, the motor protection device activated; LG says this is normal.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Timing behavior
Wash time is adjusted automatically for the load, water pressure and conditions; the time remaining is an estimate. TurboWash reduces the cycle time.
Tools and supplies
A timer, a bucket to test the flow, pliers for the inlet filters and a flashlight.

Exact questions

Common questions

Why is my LG WM4500HBA cycle longer than usual?+

The washer adjusts wash time to the load, water pressure and conditions, and the displayed time is only an estimate.

Is a pause normal?+

Yes. A motor protection device can stop the washer for a few minutes and then restart it.

Does an unbalanced load add time?+

Yes. The washer stops and refills to redistribute the load.

Does TurboWash change the time?+

The manual says Turbo Wash reduces the cycle time while giving similar wash performance to the same cycle without it.

Can I change the spin speed?+

Yes. Press the Spin button; not every speed is available with every cycle.

Does low pressure slow the fill?+

Yes. Check the faucets, hoses and inlet filters.

Do I need to do anything for a long estimate?+

No. The time remaining is only an estimate and actual time may vary.
