Whirlpool WFW9620 front-load washer will not drain or stops with water inside

If the Whirlpool WFW9620 will not drain, Whirlpool's Product Help starts with the drain pump filter on models that have one: it may be clogged with dirt, lint or other items and should be cleaned occasionally, with different steps for models with and without a storage drawer. Then the drain hose: no more than 4.5 in (113 mm) inside the drainpipe, not taped or sealed in, and the drain top at least 30 in from the floor. The F9 E1 code means drain times are longer than expected, typically over eight minutes: check the hose for kinks and clogs, use the U-shaped form, and keep the standpipe between 39 in and 96 in.

Try in this order

0 of 5 completed
  1. Clean the drain pump filter

    Reversible

On models that have one, open the access, drain the water into a pan, remove the filter and clear it of dirt, lint and objects.

  2. Check the hose

    Reversible

Check the hose, which must not be kinked or clogged, and be 4.5 in or less into the drainpipe, not taped.

  3. Check the standpipe

    Reversible

39 in minimum and 96 in maximum; the top of the drain at least 30 in for siphon safety.

  4. Cut the suds

    Reversible

Cut the suds, by using HE detergent only, since excess suds delay draining, and then test again to see whether it helped.

  5. Restart a drain

    Reversible

Restart a drain, by running Drain and Spin, and watch the water leave the drum.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Siphoning and draining together
A drain hose that goes too far into the drainpipe lets drained water siphon back into the washer, and a hose sealed with tape removes the air gap that breaks the suction. Both look like a washer that will not drain or that keeps refilling. Whirlpool's fix is the same for each: no more than 4.5 in in the pipe, no tape, and a drain top that is high enough.
Storage drawer and no drawer models
Whirlpool's drain article separates models with a storage drawer under the washer from models without one when it describes reaching the drain pump filter, so the access differs by model. The filter is there to catch dirt, lint and small items, and Whirlpool says to clean it on an occasional basis to keep the washer operating properly. If you cannot find a filter on your model, the drain hose and household drain are the first places to look.
