Genie screw drive opener codes
Genie screw-drive openers use a threaded rod to move the trolley and report faults through the LED on the motor unit. Screw drives need occasional lubrication of the rod, and a noisy or jerky opener may need it. Check the safety sensors, the wall console wires and the travel limits when the door will not close.
If the opener hums but the door does not move, the trolley may be disconnected or the door may be heavy because of a spring problem. Never force the door and call a technician for springs and cables.
Screw drive openers move a carriage along a threaded rod, so they have fewer moving parts than a chain drive, and the rod needs a light lubrication of the type the manual names every year. The common faults are a safety sensor problem and a door that is out of balance. To check the balance, disconnect the opener and lift the door by hand to half height: a balanced door stays put. A door that falls or rises needs its springs adjusted by a technician.
Screw drive openers have few moving parts, and their faults concentrate in the sensors, the travel limits and the force settings. The safety reversing sensors must be aligned for the door to close; if they are not, the opener may reverse or not move at all. Clean each lens with a soft cloth and check that the indicator lights on both sensors are steady. A loose bracket or a tilted sensor is the usual cause of misalignment.
The door's travel limits tell the opener where open and closed are. If the door stops short or reverses before it reaches the floor, the limit may need adjusting, which the manual describes with a screwdriver on the motor head. Make changes in small steps and test after each. The force setting controls how hard the opener pushes before it reverses; set it too low and the door stops on a slight stiffness, too high and it may not reverse safely.
A noisy door often means that the rollers, hinges or tracks need lubricating with a garage door lubricant, not grease on the screw drive unless the manual says so. Check the balance of the door by disconnecting the opener and lifting the door by hand. Test the auto-reverse monthly with a board on the floor. Never adjust the springs or cables yourself; they hold a large amount of energy.
Do screw drive openers need lubrication?
Yes. Lubricate the rod with the lubricant the manual names, once or twice a year.
How do I check the door balance?
Disconnect the opener and see whether the door stays at half height.
