Open recordKidde smoke and carbon monoxide alarm chirps and lights
A smoke or carbon monoxide alarm that chirps is almost always telling you something about its own state, not about a fire, and the pattern matters: a single chirp at intervals normally means a low battery, a different pattern can mean the alarm has reached the end of its life, and a chirp after a battery change can mean the battery is not seated or the alarm needs to be reset. A full alarm, with a loud repeating siren, is an emergency: get everyone out and call the fire service.
Check the manual or the label on the back of your model for the exact pattern, because Kidde uses different signals on different alarms. Fit fresh batteries of the type listed, hold the test button until the alarm sounds, and vacuum or wipe dust from the vents. Smoke alarms should be replaced about every ten years and carbon monoxide alarms on the schedule printed on them, so note the date of manufacture on the back. Each pattern has its own page with what the maker says and the safe checks.
Why does my Kidde alarm chirp after I changed the battery?
The battery may not be seated fully, or the alarm may need its reset. Reseat the battery and hold the test button, then check the chirp pattern again.
How old is too old for a smoke alarm?
About ten years from the manufacture date printed on the back, so replace it even if it still tests normally.
