  Nintendo's own support article gives the identification method directly: the ORIGINAL launch console does not carry the 'XK' serial prefix that marks the improved-battery revision — a serial starting with anything other than XK (commonly XAW in the Americas) is the launch unit, rated roughly 2.5-6.5 hours versus the revision's 4.5-9 hours.
