Whirlpool dishwashers: cycles, cleaning, drain and noise

Dirty dishes point to a clogged filter, a blocked spray arm or loading that shields the dishes. A long cycle can mean cold incoming water, a slow drain or the Heated Dry and Boost options. A drain fault needs the filter, hose and air gap checked. Noise may be a utensil in the sump or an arm striking a dish.

The label with the model and serial is on the inside edge of the door. Whirlpool's support asks for both. Run the tap hot before starting, use detergent in the right amount and clean the filter monthly.

If your Whirlpool dishwasher is part of a kitchen renovation, check the installation as well as the machine. A drain hose without a high loop or an air gap lets sink water flow back, a disposer knockout plug left in place blocks the drain entirely and a kinked inlet hose starves the fill. These faults often show up in the first weeks after installation, and the installer can correct them quickly if you tell them what you see. Photograph the connections under the sink before you call so that you can describe them.

A dishwasher can also be the victim of the water around it. Hard water leaves scale on the heating element and the spray holes, and a sink disposal that is not cleared sends food back into the drain. Run the hot tap at the sink until it is hot before starting the dishwasher, scrape plates instead of rinsing them and clear the disposal first. Check the dishwasher's own filter every month. These three habits remove most of the cleaning and drain complaints that we see.

If the dishwasher fills slowly, check the inlet screen for scale and the supply valve under the sink. If it leaves dishes damp, use rinse aid and the heated dry option, and open the door slightly at the end of the cycle.

Whirlpool also builds dishwashers for other brands, so you may find a KitchenAid or Maytag model with a similar layout. The model number on your own dishwasher decides which manual and parts apply, so do not assume that a part from a different brand's model will fit. Check the label on the door and use the number when you search for parts.
