diagnostic code 5-5 (5 UP, 5 DOWN) means A remote light is required for unattended operation. This code applies to the LiftMaster and Chamberlain wall-mounted jackshaft openers 8500W / RJO70, 98022 / RJO101 and 98032. As a safety precaution, the opener will not move the door in response to an unattended command without a paired myQ-compatible remote light. myQ cannot operate the door, scheduled closes and smart-home automations do not run, and Timer-to-Close will not close the door, while the wall control and remotes still work.

Open recordChamberlain and LiftMaster garage openers: reading the lights
These openers report faults through the LED on the motor head and the learn button, and by how many times it flashes. A flashing safety sensor light usually means the two infrared sensors near the floor are misaligned or blocked, so check that both indicator lights are steady and clear any dust or spiders from the lenses. The learn button color and the number of blinks identify the remote-learning state.
Before replacing parts, check the batteries in the remotes, the power at the outlet and the wall control. The model number is on the label on the motor head, and the myQ app or the manual lists the blink patterns for that model.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers use diagnostic LEDs and a counted-flash display on the motor unit, and the myQ light on the wall console shows the connection status. Safety sensors are the first thing to check when a door will not close, then the wall console wiring, the limit settings and the battery in the remote or keypad.
A myQ connection that has dropped usually needs the Wi-Fi and the app checked; the opener's own operation does not depend on the internet. Do not disable the sensors. Springs, cables and brackets are dangerous to adjust and should be handled by a trained technician.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers count their diagnostic flashes on the motor unit, and the legend is on the unit's side panel or in the manual. The sequences identify the safety sensors, the limit settings and the logic board. The wall console's light and the myQ light on a connected opener report the connection to the app and the Wi-Fi. A door that will not close with the lights flashing is nearly always a safety-sensor problem.
The opener works without the internet, so a myQ problem does not stop it opening. Do not disable the sensors or force the door, and leave springs, cables and brackets to a trained technician.
If the opener makes a noise but the door does not move, the trolley may be disconnected from the door, the limit settings may be wrong or the door may be locked from the wall panel. Check the lock switch on the wall control, the emergency release and the travel limits. A door that is hard to move by hand needs its springs checked by a technician before the opener is blamed.
What does a flashing safety sensor light mean?
The sensors are blocked or misaligned; both lights should glow steadily when the beam is clear.
Does my opener still work when the Wi-Fi is down?
Yes. The opener works from the wall console and the remote; only the app features need the internet.
What should I check first when a Chamberlain opener will not close?
The safety sensors near the floor: both must be lit and aligned, and nothing should block the beam.
Why does my opener hum but not move the door?
The trolley may be disconnected, the lock may be on or the door may be too heavy because of a spring problem. Do not force it.
