• What owners run into
  Google no longer updates the phone, so apps drop support, the battery is exhausted and the USB-C port collects lint. The 5G modem also struggles with newer bands.
• How to approach a fault
  Clean the port, replace the battery and check whether key apps still support the phone.

  Settings, About phone shows the model G025E or similar. The phone is out of support.
• USB-C and lint
  A phone carried in a pocket collects lint in its USB-C port, which stops the cable seating. Clean it gently with a wooden toothpick with the phone off.
• Whether to keep it
  The headphone jack and compact size keep many owners attached, but many apps are dropping support for old Android versions. A battery replacement extends life, but a newer phone is the long-term answer.
• Keeping it useful
  Clear storage, uninstall unused apps and use a lite version of apps where available. Replace the battery if it shuts off early. Keep an eye on which apps stop supporting your Android version, and accept that some will no longer work.
• Headphone jack and ports
  The 3.5 millimetre jack collects pocket lint, which can cause crackle or a headset that is not detected. Blow gently into the port and use a wooden toothpick, with the phone off, to clear debris. The USB-C port needs the same care, since lint stops the cable seating.
• Living with an older Pixel
  The Pixel 4a with 5G is a 2020 phone with a 6.2 inch screen, a headphone jack and a rear fingerprint reader, and Google has ended its software updates, so it no longer receives security patches. It still works well for calls, messaging, maps and light apps, but a banking or work app may refuse to run once its minimum Android version moves on. A worn battery is the most common reason owners think the phone is failing; Settings, Battery, Battery usage and an honest look at how long it lasts will tell you, and a battery replacement from a repairer is much cheaper than a new phone. Keep storage free and clear caches so the phone stays responsive, and back it up to Google One before any repair.
• Using it safely
  Because patches have stopped, avoid installing apps from outside the Play Store, keep Play Protect on and use a strong lock. If you plan to move to a new phone, the Pixel's built-in transfer tool copies apps, photos and messages over a cable. When you sell or recycle it, erase it from Settings, System, Reset options and remove your Google account first.
