• What owners run into
  The most common faults are a speaker that sounds quiet or crackly, microphone trouble on calls, Bluetooth dropouts with earbuds and a fingerprint reader that needs a firm press. The phone is rated IP67, but water can reduce the speaker's sound until it dries.

  Test the speaker with several apps, record a video to test the microphone and re-pair Bluetooth accessories.

  Settings, About phone shows the model code and patch date. The 7a gets five years of updates from launch.
• Speaker and microphone
  The 7a's speaker is on the bottom edge with the earpiece as the second driver. Quiet sound is usually a blocked grille, a Bluetooth device taking the audio or a protector that covers the earpiece. A thin voice on calls points to a blocked microphone or a microphone access toggle in Settings, Privacy that was switched off.
• Water and dust
  The 7a is rated IP67, which allows brief immersion but not swimming. After a splash, the speaker may sound muffled until it dries, and charging while the port is wet is not advised.
• Caring for the camera and screen
  The 7a's camera lens sits in a raised bar that gets fingerprints and scratches. Wipe it with a soft cloth, use a case with a raised lip, and avoid using the phone in dusty places. A cracked or scratched lens makes photos hazy and is cheap to replace compared with a new phone.
